3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Available only at Fitchburg. Smells a lot like Aaron’s 755 amber. Some hop with friut and molasses malt. Dark red body; clear or maybe slightly hazy from what I can tell. Some lace. Tastes like it smells, which is what I feared. Not bad, but has that somewhat harsh, somewhat unpleasant molasses malt finish that Aaron 755 had. Must be the same malt used in both. Disappointing. Not an ESB at all. I really didn’t want to finish it and I didn’t. The bartender told me that it’s his favorite beer but that it changes noticeably from week to week and may be the end of the batch.
On draught at the Great Dane Fitchburg location. Pours a semi-hazy dark amber brew with a creamy off-white head that slowly dissipates to an off-white ring. Aroma of roasted caramel malt, some dried herbs, a hint of wood, apples and dried biscuits. Taste is medium bodied, with flavors of dry caramel malt, dry fuggle hops, some earthy herbs and apple. Finish is semi-dry with a lingering mild dry bitterness. phishpond417 (2088) - Madison, Wisconsin, USA - SEP 4, 2008
Sampled on draught at the Fitchburg location: Pours a dark but clear amber colour with a fairly large white head. Aroma is nutty, with soft malt and hop notes throughout. Slightly yeasty, with noticeable caramel, apples, and hop flavors. kp (10881) - Woodstock, Georgia, USA - AUG 18, 2008

Amber with thin white head. Aroma of pale hops and semi-sweet malts. Rich malty taste with a mild bitter finish. Decent beer, though no exactly an ESB. Petrucci914 (910) - Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA - FEB 22, 2008
Pours a light copper color with a medium frothy head and lots of lacing. Aroma is caramel malts and earthy hops. Taste is about the same. Very drinkable and pleasant.

Draft at the brewpub (Fitchburg). Poured a clear copper color. Head was off white with good retention and lacing. Aroma was of butterscotch, vanilla, and caramel. Slightly sweet on the tongue with malty caramel, minimal burnt toffee and an earthy, woody note. Pretty good. jewedekind (450) - Middleton, Wisconsin, USA - NOV 30, 2006
Tap at brewery. Not listed as the Sugar River - but since there is no other ESB here - I’ll call it good. A great session beer with a pleasant nose of Fuggle or Goldings and biscuits. Much the same with the aroma - honey and herbs. Looks fine in the glass also with a red-amber glow - rich and woody. Not a mouthful - but pleasant. Great quaffability. Well-used penny copper with a small layer of light tan head. Much darker than I expect for an ESB. Lemon rind, damp hay and quite a bit of sweetness to the aroma. Soft, lightly sweet malt flavor with a balanced clean hop backbone. Nice mouthfilling and round palate, but still refreshing. Taste nice, smells a little odd. UPDATED: MAR 12, 2006 Cask-conditioned pour at the Madison brewpub. Hazy, autumny brown pour with a tall, cascading, creamy beige head (not what I expected, but looked cool). Nose found soft floral bitterness, caramel, and light spices. Flavor was of smooth caramel across the middle with sharper floral bitters surrounding. Lighter carbonation from the cask treatment with nice balance between smooth malts and the bittering hops. This was alright, but remarkably un-exciting.
