Watermelon beer, I have to try it. Appearance of pink lemonade with a bit of white head on it. Wheat and fruity aroma, obvious watermelon, but good. Flavor is watermelon with that standard wheat twang in the finish. Watery with a lightly acidic finish. Not something I could drink a whole glass of, but fun to try. On tap, Madison brewpub. Very pink, very carbonated, very sweet, white diminishing head, light body. Several different sources of watermelon in this including extract. Tastes exactly like fresh watermelon. That would be a great thing...in anything other than beer! Seriously a great and unique effort, but I couldn’t choke it down. It’s targeted at non-beer drinkers and their girlfriends. It’s unusual for me to rate a beer from such a great brewpub so low, it’s just this particular offering. muzzlehatch (4959) - Beloit, Wisconsin, USA - JUL 2, 2004
Sample at the Madison location. Bright pink, creamy foam, big lacing. Surprisingly complex and enticing nose of melon, lime, caramel malt and a touch of chocolate. The sweet, acidic watermelon flavors seem to mix uneasily with the sour wheat and reasonably thick maltiness; a failure in some ways, but a noble one. Wow, really red. This is a very interesting tasting beer, with a slice of watermelon in it. Definatly a new taste, to say the least. Pjones6738 (500) - Madison, Wisconsin, USA - JUN 7, 2004
Pink color, served with a slice of watermelon. Normally, I’m not big on bars putting a piece of fruit in the beer, but at a brewpub, its their beer, and they know how best to serve it. Besides, watermelon tastes good. Sweet, slightly citrusy scent, with a sweet taste. The watermelon worked well in the beer. The normal wheat beer tastes helped to mellow the watermelon’s sweetness, and make it nice and refreshing. Not something I’d drink every day, but I enjoyed it.

From a growler. Pink Kool-Aid body with almost no head. The usual wheat aromas and flavors with watermelon added. Kind of watery at the end. Not really that good but interesting. I didn’t think it tasted either artificial or too sweet, as watermelon doesn’t have a strong flavor anyways. I’m glad that I tried it. DavidP (1748) - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA - MAY 24, 2004
Fake watermelon flavor and aroma, pink/orange body. Nutra Sweet watermelon flavor with slight wheat notes. Yuck. JCapriotti (1379) - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA - MAY 22, 2004
Somewhat dark pink amber color. White creamy head. Aroma is watermelon schnapps, teeny bopper perfume, and wheat. Weird belgian-type taste... banana, watermelon, wheat. Eh... too sweet and artificial (even though it may be real watermelon, it just doesn't ring my bell). JPDIPSO (6223) - Wauwatosa, USA - MAY 13, 2004
Pink color with a light pastel pink head. Aroma of watermelon and light malt. Laughy taffy flavor. Comments regarding the brewing method of brewing as told by jewedekind were related to me, and I agree with his rate and comments. The fact that this finishes dry and slightly malty helped me finish this fruity brew. I can see this being quite popular with the fruit and flavored frenzied crowd. jewedekind (450) - Middleton, Wisconsin, USA - MAY 1, 2004
UPDATED: JUL 19, 2006 Although not anyone’s cup of tea, I imagine, this really is a good beer. Uses true watermelon extract bought from a local farmer (or so I’m told), NOT artificial flavoring. The melon taste was up front and true. This did not taste like the sickening sour Jolly Rancher watermelon taste, but tasted truly like watermelon. The melon gave way to the excellent wheat taste that the Dane is famous for. If I liked fruit beer, this would be exceptional..but I don’t, so it ain’t. Extra credit for innovation!!
2006 RE-RATE This year’s version is a big disappointment. Tastes more like watermelon rind.
