UPDATED: JUL 19, 2006 Although not anyone’s cup of tea, I imagine, this really is a good beer. Uses true watermelon extract bought from a local farmer (or so I’m told), NOT artificial flavoring. The melon taste was up front and true. This did not taste like the sickening sour Jolly Rancher watermelon taste, but tasted truly like watermelon. The melon gave way to the excellent wheat taste that the Dane is famous for. If I liked fruit beer, this would be exceptional..but I don’t, so it ain’t. Extra credit for innovation!!
2006 RE-RATE This year’s version is a big disappointment. Tastes more like watermelon rind. JCapriotti (1379) - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA - MAY 22, 2004
Somewhat dark pink amber color. White creamy head. Aroma is watermelon schnapps, teeny bopper perfume, and wheat. Weird belgian-type taste... banana, watermelon, wheat. Eh... too sweet and artificial (even though it may be real watermelon, it just doesn't ring my bell). tomxcs (321) - California, USA - MAY 28, 2004
From a growler. Pink Kool-Aid body with almost no head. The usual wheat aromas and flavors with watermelon added. Kind of watery at the end. Not really that good but interesting. I didn’t think it tasted either artificial or too sweet, as watermelon doesn’t have a strong flavor anyways. I’m glad that I tried it. hezron (614) - Viroqua, Wisconsin, USA - JUN 2, 2005
Watermelon beer, I have to try it. Appearance of pink lemonade with a bit of white head on it. Wheat and fruity aroma, obvious watermelon, but good. Flavor is watermelon with that standard wheat twang in the finish. Watery with a lightly acidic finish. Not something I could drink a whole glass of, but fun to try. On tap at GD - Madison. Poured hazy pink with a short, creamy head. Aroma was of freshly-sliced watermelons with some tangy wheat lurking way in the background. The flavor had fresh, sweet watermelon upfront with tangy wheat and mild spices coming through about halfway.. spritzy watermelon again at the finish. Lighter-bodied with a decent flow to it.. not bad.

Just had this on tap last night at the downtown Dane: Pours a bright hazey orange colour with a big bouqet of flowers, fruit and spices. Watermelon, raspberries other berry fruit. Taste was a little too much. Like really too much. Way too sweet for me. And i guess this makes sense to a point, watermelon could be a pretty appealing taste, but it just wasn’t doing it for me. Sorry. Take it easy on the fruit mista! TheEnemy (564) - Chicago, USA - AUG 15, 2005
UPDATED: AUG 20, 2005 On tap at the brewpub. Odd aroma like bread soaked in cough syrup; thin pinkish head sits atop lovely, dainty, clear rosy liquid; Flavor overly sweet like a Jolly Rancher; wheat and watermelon flavors do not mesh well, though the wheat base -- when it can be discerned -- is this beer’s primary redeeming feature. Bartender claims the head brewers don’t even like it but they keep making it because of its improbable popularity; the pub is, after all, in a student area, and one speculates the co-eds need something they can tolerate while their meathead boyfriends drink the more substantial stuff. A rare miss from an otherwise high-quality brewpub. DavidP (1748) - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA - MAY 24, 2004
Fake watermelon flavor and aroma, pink/orange body. Nutra Sweet watermelon flavor with slight wheat notes. Yuck. rubbishystuff (2538) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - MAY 4, 2011
UPDATED: FEB 25, 2017 Had at the Madison location. Interesting stuff. Somewhat like drinking a jolly rancher but works a little better than that. Serving: Tap BATLMULLET (127) - Highland, Indiana, USA - JUL 5, 2004
On tap, Madison brewpub. Very pink, very carbonated, very sweet, white diminishing head, light body. Several different sources of watermelon in this including extract. Tastes exactly like fresh watermelon. That would be a great thing...in anything other than beer! Seriously a great and unique effort, but I couldn’t choke it down. It’s targeted at non-beer drinkers and their girlfriends. It’s unusual for me to rate a beer from such a great brewpub so low, it’s just this particular offering.
