Great Divide 20th Anniversary Belgian-Style Ale

RATINGS: 182   WEIGHTED AVG: 3.38/5   SEASONAL: Special   EST. CALORIES: 246   ABV: 8.2%
This Belgian-style Ale is a golden example of our traditional bold character, but with a little something special to commemorate this milestone. Fermented with Viognier grape juice, 20th Anniversary is both delicate and assertive. Big without being brutish, cunning without being cloying, this is a grown-up beer for a big-time celebration.

Found this on the shelves of my local liquor store after having aged a bit over three years. Couldn’t resist the temptation. The beer came out nice and bubbly, and hazy, pale golden body looked right at home in a Duvel tulip, The head was two fingers thick, and had a dense consistency. The smell of the beer was sweet, giving off banana, bubblegum, and red delicious apple aromas. The taste was much blander than expected, perhaps due to the age. The sweetness was indistinct with a tinge of vinousness, and there was no hop presence. The body also felt very thin, and experience lacked much complexity. Glad that this was a cheap thrill.

Bottle from Specs. 2 years old at drinking. Rating #4400. Big head response, murky appearance. Brownish red. Fruity aroma. Grape meat, Some spice on the flavor. A slight bit of warmth can be felt. Dark fruit with a little sweetness. Some esters may have fallen off over time. Interesting.

22oz bottle. Pours a straw color with half a finger of white head. Little lacing down the sides. Nose is Belgian yeast, cut grass, coriander, grape, some citrus. Taste is quite a bit of citrus and Belgian yeast on the front and finishes relatively dry. Feel is crisp with moderate-heavy carbonation.

Bottle:   Dull straw, a bit hazy, soft frothy white head, little lacing.   Bready nose, yeasty.   Similar tongue, slighlty bright.   Reminds me of an American Tripel.   A little fruity, perhaps its like White Grape juice.   Finishes a little dry.   A little juicy on the finish, less bready but more fruity.   Tiz decent, clean, but a bit boring.

Hazy golden color. Sweet fruity aroma of bread and small citrus hints. Fruity taste with a bit much yeast. Lingering finish with spices and citrus.

June 1st, 2014 - Great Divide is celebrating a huge landmark with the gorgeously labeled 20th Anniversary Ale, a cloudy, thick, pudding like body of a brew with a similarly creamy head to match. The dense fog of the body settles up top, gradually peeling away near the bottom of the glass, eventually turning into a clearer brew, providing a full body spectrum for the eye to linger on. The aroma is crammed with Belgian yeast scents, with tons of freshly unwrapped, chalky, dusty blobs of Bazooka Joe (old fashioned) bubble gum. Globs of overripe banana mush, ripe for a shake or a smoothie, are present in the aroma, too, and decorated with brown sugar and vanilla. The thick caramel sweetness of the aroma finds is mismatched with the flavor, tangy, tangy, tangy. Banana appears here too with a slight fermented booze edge, but that funky tang reminds me of a pear doused in liqueurs, or a freshly sliced pear hiding under a sheet of greek yogurt, garnished with clove and dry grains, like a saison.

Bomber into a tulip. Pours a hazy yellow, with a big white head that quickly fades. Nose is Belgian yeast notes of cloves, bananas, and licorice. Taste is that of a typical Belgian strong ale, with a dry finish containing a hint of grapes. Nice.

Pours a hazy medium yellow. Aroma is lightly malty, hoppy, yeasty. Flavor is moderately sweet, highly alcoholic, with a nice hop bite to it.
