3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Served in a snifter. Pours an opaque, jet black, with a wispy dark brown head that dissipates quickly. Moderate lacing remains. Aroma is very forward, with a definite presence of alcohol. Roasted chocolate malts are the other main aroma, with some oakiness in the background. Taste is quite pleasant, as flavors of burnt chocolate and vanilla come forward immediately. Alcohol is present, but does not overpower. There is a pleasing sweet/sour interplay, too. The aftertaste is of chiles, and the bite increases as the beer warms. Mouthfeel is very good: thick, oily, and smooth, as you’d expect from a beer of this style. Overall, a fine stout, whose whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
