3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle @ Monk’s Porter House. Dark amber colour with a medium sized beige head. Aroma of malt, caramel, fruit. Flavour is malt caramel, dark fruits, some nuts.
Poured from a 22 oz 2011 bottle.
Aroma is is fruity with a large sherry note along with some fig, date, prune and raisin. Moderate caramel and toffee notes. A slight ashy, burnt note. Some medium light cardboard oxidation.
Pours a hazy, dark burnt amber color with a medium sized, moderately thick, tan head head that slowly recedes to the edges. Moderate lacing and meidum long legs.
Flavor is fairly sweet with a lot of fruit notes. Lots of sherry, plum, fig, date, prune and raisin. Some light cherry and berry as well. Medium caramel and toffee notes with a bit of toasted bread. Some treacle as well and a touch of a burnt note. Medium bitterness with no hop flavor. Lingering fruit with a touch of spice and some caramel. A light cardboard note, but this has held up pretty well.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium high carbonation. Low, but present astringency and medium low alcohol warmth.
Overall, a very fruity beer. Good malt notes and a lot of fruit esters in both the aroma and flavor. Oxidation is definitely creeping into the aroma, but the flavor is still holding up pretty well. pivnizub (10907) - Bochum, GERMANY - NOV 9, 2014

"minus the youngish metalic aroma, this is one tasty beer. the aroma just never came together, but the beer itself was a big, slightly boozy (but never hot) showcase of malt and dark fruit. probably not one i’d get again, as the price was steep and hard to find, but glad i tried it."

Poured from bottle to glass . Copper hue with off white heady hat dissipated to a ring. Aroma is figs, raisins, cola, berries, banana. Mouthfeel is decent with a medium body and crisp carbonation. Taste is sweet throughout. Overall this was a good brew.

650 mL bottle shared at an impromptu tasting at Tippins. Thanks Dom! The pour is a quite dark ruby color with a medium off white head and a pretty nice lace. The aroma is big on fruit on the front end. There is also a strong vanilla and caramel maltiness that moves in on the center of the nose and finishes with a big sweet malt bomb. It’s pretty complex and good. The flavor is more of the same. I love the fruitiness, but at the same time the malts and yeast combine blissfully. There is a great sweet, caramel-ish finish. The mouth feel is just prefect. Thin velvety, a nice carbonation but not overdone, and the aftertaste just lingers beautifully scoth (693) - Fort Collins, Colorado, USA - JAN 30, 2014
Bottle from Jan 2011. Pours clear deep chestnut brown with a medium beige head, very fine rapidly dissipating lacing. Aromas of vanilla, caramel, cherry, peach, and grass. Medium full body, smooth and creamy, a little hot. Big malty sweetness almost cloying, a hint of citrus, and a mild bitter finish. Aged well. Had this several times, the most recently X-mas 2013. Pours hay coppery toward brown with off-white head. Nose was caramellly, dark fruity. Tasted of caramel malt, yeasty funky fruity notes, plum, prune, fig, and finishing hops.
Elegant, komplex, lättdrucken och riktigt gott. generallee08 (778) - New York, USA - OCT 14, 2013
Presentation: It was poured from a (foiled and capped) brown 650ml bottle into a tulip glass. The label has a nice description of the beer, the abv (11%) and a freshness/born on date. ("BOTTLED ON JAN 31 2011")
Appearance: The body has a deep ruby color with great clarity when held up to light. From the vigorous pour I got a small one finger cap that fades quickly. This sets up a wispy thin off white film with a ring of lace at the edge of the glass.
Smell: The first sniff is a bit odd and muddled. As it warms a bit, it opens up and I can start to pick up its many layers of sweetness. First up I get the fruit with notes of raisins, prune, blackberries and black currants. Next up, honey and spicy peppery notes mixed with herbal liquor like boozy sweetness. This is all very interesting and deep.
Taste/Palate: Just like the aroma, my first sip was overwhelming and cloying. As it warms up dark fruit notes begin to pop out of a cloyingly sweet maltiness with notes of maple syrup, black currants, raisins covered in honey and prunes. A peppery alcoholic warmth wraps around the palate and it finishes with a touch of spicy clove, mild herbal hops and tons of residual sweetness. The palate is full thick and sticky with light carbonation.
Notes: As it warms it opens up many layers of complexity. However all of it is super sweet, unbalanced and boozy to the point of it becoming hard to finish. I am a big fan of Great Divide brewery but this one needs some work.
