English-style Old Ale. Hibernation Ale is Colorado’s original strong ale -- it has been Great Divide’s winter seasonal each year since 1995. Hibernation’s massive flavors are so intense that it requires over three months of aging each year. This lengthy aging process gives Hibernation its revered malty richness, complex hop profile and hearty warming character, which is perfect right out of the bottle or cellared for longer periods of time.

12 oz. can. Pours clear dark amber with a small light beige head. Aroma is caramel, coffee, nuts, chocolate notes. Taste follows nose with an emphasis on nuttiness and malts. Pretty good stuff.

Can @ home. Very enjoyable stuff. A bit like a barleywine or quadrupel, but slightly more hop forward and less sticky sweet. Still quite sweet, don’t get me wrong, but not annoyingly sweet. Good stuff! Medium to full body, soft carbo.

can, 355 ml, filled on 27.10.2016. very dark copper with off white, rather creamy head. dried fruits, roasty, toasted brioche, grains, medium body, very softly carbonated, medium sweetness, light to medium bitterness (lasting), good balance. really drinkable, alcohol well integrated.

PowY (1338) - AUSTRIA - DEC 2, 2017
355 ml can at home, bottled 27.11.2016. Pours a dark copper with a beige head. The aroma is medium malty with toffee, caramel, biscuit and some sweet dark fruits. Medium to medium full body with a soft carbonation, a light to medium sweetness and a medium lasting bitterness - good balance. The flavor is again malty with brown sugar, honey, almond, some nuts, quite some wood and a piney hoppy bitterness. Finishes with a hoppy bitterness, hints of alcohol and nearly dry. Overall mellow and enjoyable.

Pours a slightly murky dark copper with a couple of fingers of off-white head. Quite lively and complex aroma. Caramel malts, raisins/figs and slightly citric fruitiness, slight alcohol warminess and a bit of spiciness among a quite strong resinous feel. Taste follows the aroma, with an overall less clean and maybe less vivid profile, with some earthiness to it. Overall this is quite strong in both sweetness and bitterness. Medium to dense bodied with average carbonation. All in all an intense and quite interesting beer, though not too refined in my opinion.

Barwa brunatna, piana kremowa, lekko zdobiąca szkło. Aromat średnio-intensywny, mało złożony. Dominują ziemiste aromaty chmielu i karmelowo-melasowe tło. W smaku pełne, słodkie, karmel, melasa, tosty. Finisz to średnia ziemista goryczka i lekko rozgrzewanie alkoholu.

2 finger, cream head. Deep, dark ruby coloured beer.

Aroma is fresh coffee beans, raisins, wooden barrel, dark whole wheat bread, dark chocolate and a light note of citrusy hops.

Taste is roasted malts, dark roast coffee, dark rye bread, soil, barrel characteristics and light citrusy hops.

Mouthfeel is medium-heavy with a medium, roasty bitterness. Rather high carbonation for such a big beer but it definitely works!

Overall: Honestly leans more in the direction of a heavy Porter. Lots and lots of roasted notes and not much of the typical dark fruits. Very rich in maltiness however and that makes this a really nice winter warmer.
