Having this was like having an old friend over after several years, wiser and more interesting. At serious wine booziness, it was a major challenge to conduct intellectual exercises. Great looks with a to-inch head. Boozy but also woody aromas. Mellow, hoppy, oaky, full mouthfeel, it was very satisfying. The bourbon, was minor, as we Canadians are not such big corn whiskey fans. I was getting more excellent oak. A great blending, and something I wanted to share, and is meant to share, but could not on the coldest night of the year.

2009 bottle #116/1188 poured into a Great Divide snifter. pours a deep red with no head - a lot of yeast at the bottom of the bottle. The whiskey barrels deliver a huge vanilla nose with sweet caramel notes and whiskey notes. I could smell this beer forever. Medium body with a slick feel throughout. The whiskey notes hit right away on the front of the mouth with the vanilla and oak notes coating the sides. Some sweet notes of caramel, cinnamon and red apples linger. Bigger malt notes coat the mouth on the finish with the whiskey barrels coming forward on the back end. The time spent in the wood mellows this beast of a Barley Wine and transforms it into a smooth intricate after dinner drink with lots of whiskey, oak and vanilla notes coupled with sweet malts and dark fruit notes.

Pours a deep brown with an off white head and some lacing. Aroma of caramel, bourbon, dark fruits, and oak. Super sweet flavor with hints of caramel, dark fruits, and alcohol.

Bottle shared at Maltzilla’s All American Weekend. Pours hazy medium brown color with tan head. Aromas of caramel, whisky, oak and vanilla. Similar flavors. Medium to full body with average carbonation. Another nice barrel aged beer from Great Divide.

Bottle shared by Mr. Smith. Great Divide always comes through and this is not an exception. Lots of sweet caramel notes that are nicely balanced with warm boozy whiskey flavors...

unfortunately this one was completely flat, but overall stil fairly tsty, was able to drink a few ounces of it. still pretty damn hot and sharp, but a nice big whiskey profile and lots of tasty sweet malt. some hop bittterness adds to the twang. would love to try this on peak form.

Bottle. Pours a murky orange color with a slight white head. The aroma is farily fruity to me with notes of apples and pears mixed with some barrel notes. The taste is very similiar to the aroma. Sweet fruit flavors up front that is very easy to drink, almost too easy. No real hop characteristics. Very smooth. Medium mouthfeel. Slight warming effect from the alcohol.

750 mL bottle courtesy photomike. Pours a brownish gold color with a khaki head. Big whiskey notes alongside the usual caramel and toffee, partially damped by a mild woodiness. Vanilla, caramel, and coconut are the predominant flavors with a slight astringency that could be from the wood or the hops. Markedly less hoppy/bitter than the standard version. Not a huge fan of barrel aging a hoppy BW.

Happily crushed with my Honjkeybra. Aged for about 6 months. Hand-labeled bottle 397/1188. Still a little boozy but it’s Stranahan’s so that’s cool. Great whiskey flavor combined with the barleywine sweetness. Aged a little longer I can see this getting even better. Kick-ass beer.

750ml bottle 92/461 ’08 Vintage 9/12/10 (Davidson’s)-Pours a hazy dark red with a small tan ring for a head. Aroma of whisky, oak ,malt, vanilla, and vodka. Taste of whisky, caramel, vanilla, oak, and alcohol. This full bodied brew is still a little hot but otherwise it is fantastic. Awesome brew.
