COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Old Ruffian is a hefty, hop-forward Barley Wine. Seemingly mellow at first sniff, with its subtle fruit aromas and complex caramel sweetness, this deep mahogany-hued ale quickly shows its true character marked by bold hop flavors and massive hop bitterness. Old Ruffian’s rich, slightly creamy, caramel malt mouthfeel balances its grapefruit, pine, and floral hop flavors, working wonders on your palate.
A mind-numbing 90 International Bittering Units (IBUs).

Bottle from Brewdog Edinburgh,. Appearance - beautiful. Autumnal red / brown with a nice amount of lacing. Nose - red fruits, general resin, pine. Taste - strawberry, earthiness and spice. Parsnip? So like roasted parsnips glazed in strawberry jam. Palate - medium to full bodied with a creamy yet tangy texture and a long dry tangy finish. Overall - lovely beer.

12oz bottle. Pours a dark ruby color with small beige head. Hoppy aroma along with that of caramel malt. Very flavorful, loads of piney hop notes with a bit of caramel malt sweetness. Long bitter finish. Pretty good.

Flaska från SB. Mörkt brunröd med ljusbeige skum. Doft av karamell och torkad frukt. Rejäl beska med kola i smaken.

Dark red liquid with a ver lacy off white head. Aroma is citrus and hops with a hint of malt. Taste starts rather smooth, but explodes in hop biterness. Not really what I was expecting from a barley wine. This tastes more like an imperial double IPA. Very good though.

Gluepot (640) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - MAY 5, 2016
Dense light tan head on a beautiful mahogany body. Nose has an array of fruity hops malt, booze and candied fruit. Lots of good things going on in the taste profile - slightly piney hop bitterness with some berries and grapefruit, roasted caramel malt, and some spice and pepper. Sweet but not cloying. A medium dense body. Classic American Barley Wine balances but not big enough to be an all-star.

allanmb (269) - Tyne & Wear, ENGLAND - MAY 1, 2016
Pours deep red with good tan head. Very clear. Aroma of pine hops and malt with a hint of orange zest. Good carbonation and oily mouth feel. Taste is initially malt but then very quickly hop bitterness takes over with mild alcohol burn. A hint of wood in the profile too

Bottle shared by Mike at the Barleywine tasting. Deep copper color off white head. Rich caramel and toffee with light pitted fruits and hints of floral earthy hop. Pretty tasty and I’m surprised I haven’t rated this before.

Klassischer Barley Wine mit einigen Früchten, etwas an Hopfen, Malz und einer leichten Nussigkeit. Süffig, einfach zu trinken, echt in Ordnung ohne groß aufzutrumpfen.

Bottle from trade with HenrikO, many thanks! The beer has got a deep dark brown colour with a small head and smooth body. Aroma of barley, malt and dark bread. Taste of barley, woods, hops, fruits, barrel and strong alcohol. Bitter-medicinic finish.
