COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Old Ruffian is a hefty, hop-forward Barley Wine. Seemingly mellow at first sniff, with its subtle fruit aromas and complex caramel sweetness, this deep mahogany-hued ale quickly shows its true character marked by bold hop flavors and massive hop bitterness. Old Ruffian’s rich, slightly creamy, caramel malt mouthfeel balances its grapefruit, pine, and floral hop flavors, working wonders on your palate.
A mind-numbing 90 International Bittering Units (IBUs).

I scored a bottle that is exactly 6 months old at Friar Tuck’s. Bottled on 12/13/13; I’m drinking it on 6/13/14. Old Ruffian has a great rich scent of caramel, toffee, sweetness, plum, some booze, a hard to place leather/woodsy smell and faint hops at the end. Very complex and pleasant aroma - similar to a scotch ale but more high end. Outstanding. Pours a striking dark amber/ruby color which is darker at the top that it is at the bottom. Thin white ring of foam and heavy lacing. Very nice looking. Taste is some hops up front but not sharp or bitter. That gives way to the caramel and toffee that was previewed in the aroma and goes back to hops in the aftertaste but again, not overdone. Perhaps it is the age of the bottle. The palate is full and smooth for a barleywine, it coats your mouth and adds to the aftertaste. This is up there with many of the great barleywines I have had and it is cheaper than many of them to boot. I was surprised at how good this is.

Deep brown red with lasting head. Caramel nose. Up front burnt toffee sweetness followed by aggressive earthy bitterness. A beer to finish the night (or finish you off). Rated by BrewTom

Bottle from GBBF 2016. On the pour this is clearly a big hoppy barley wine. Lovely ruby red colour with beiege off white head. Nose is sweet, bitter, earthy, barley sugar, yeast extract, caramel, sugar toffee, grapefruit rind, marmalde, orange peel, pine, resiny. Taste is solid. Spicy, orange and grapefruit peel, caramel, acidic, pine, bitter citrus. The hop is massively bitter, possibly too much. The finish is all bitter citrus rind. Too much for me!

BOTTLE 12 OZ. Clear dark copper, sediment, beige head. Super sticky sweet aroma, caramel and rosewater. Big sweet sticky taste, with an aggressive balancing bitterness just as big.

Where: Old Line Fine Wine Spirits & Bistro. How: 12 ounce bottle. Appearance: huge nice creamy slightly khaki in color head. Body is a rich caramel with very little clarity. Aroma: resins floral piney malty. Some burnt sugars. Taste: lots of resin, burnt sugars, malts, a little floral hints. Palate: Slightly thin not super cloying but it does coat the tongue. Overall: A fairly solid barleywine but not anything to write home about. Laces the glass beautifully though.

UPDATED: DEC 25, 2016 Aus der Flasche getrunken (Weihnachtskalender von Saveur Biere). Dunkles Mahagoni mit wenig Schaum. In der Nase Fassaromen (!?). Ungewöhnliche Hopfigkeit für ein Barley Wine. Im Nachtrunk kommt die Alkohollast.90 IBUs (!!!!).

bottle @ Keg Liquors / Clarksville IN --- Aroma of malt and caramel. Hazy brown color, frothy beige head, several lace stripes. Taste is caramel malt, medium fizz, and notes o0f caramelized brown sugar leading to a finish that shows more alcohol than hops. Big brew, balanced, and strong.
