Bottle from Trembling Madness, York. This inky black beer has ruby red highlights and floral pine and grapefruit flavours, roasted and chocolate notes with a zesty citrus finish.

Cask at Craven Arms, Birmingham. Unbelievably drinkable BIPA. Charcoal, chippings of roadside workings, delicious hoppy smoothness. And lets mention the smoothness again: this beer is very smooth, plus the flavour lasts and lasts. Fantastic.

33cl bottle at home from Appellation Wines, Edinburgh. Body is nearly black, head is very small, off-white, mostly diminishing, good lacing. Nose is light roasty, aroma is pine, herbs, spices, wood, roasted malt. Light to medium sweet, medium bitter. Finish is interesting light herbs, medium lasting roasty bitter, watery side taste. Medium to full body, dry texture, soft carbonation. Easy, very tasty, great beer.

330ml bottle from The Beehive. Good sized cream head, nice little lacing. Dark black body. Nose is coffee, chocolate milk, roasted nuts. Flavour is sharp spicy hops, roasted nuts then big coffee flavour which carries on to the finish and lingers a long time. Milky chocolate plays around the edges. Rich, smooth, creamy mouthfeel, light carbonation. Delicious, luxurious.

Cask conditioned handpump Wenlock Arms London 06/09/13. A black beer with an off-white bubbly head. Slightly roasty in the nose but its mostly hops. Big grapefruity stuff with hints of coffee in the mouth. Lovely flavours. Very nice indeed. Quality.

On cask at Congress, Longton. Pours pitch black with a tan head. Hop smack aroma, smooth mouthfeel. Some smoke, hint of caramel. So much going on with this. Bloody marvellous but I did somewhat over do it, it aint a session ale at 6.5%....

Cask conditioned at Stratford upon Avon Beer Festival 15. Black with cream head. There is a deep, dark roasted, full palate to the malts, charcoal hints with crispy toast then a strong, bittering chocolate note. Amongst all of this malty stuff going on there is a leafy, grassy, bittering hop character. Loads going on but not really that confusing. I liked this a lot and my beer of this Festival.

Bottle in the Head of Steam, Newcastle. Pours black with a cream head. Some good bitter hop piney flavour over some nice chocolate malt notes. Surprisingly refreshing. Tasty stuff. A fine black IPA.
