Name Origin: On the West Coast, surfers have a term for that perfect time of day, when the waves are breaking just right and it feels like you can ride forever. They call it Alchemy Hour. In Cleveland, our surfers have to work a little harder to find a perfect swell. Dressed in wetsuits, up at dawn, they camp out on the shores of Lake Erie in near-freezing temperatures, waiting for the ultimate wave. Crazy? Yes. Extreme? Definitely. Alchemy Hour Double IPA pays tribute to the North Coasts unlikely surf bums and the ancient quest for liquid gold, wherever it may live: on the ocean, in a lake, in a bottle.

Style Origin: Distinctively American, the Double IPA or Imperial IPA is thought to have originated in California. This fairly new style is a heartier, hoppier version of the traditional IPA with a higher alcohol content, creating a very strong and flavorful drinking experience.

Flavor: Hop-forward with a balanced blend of Mosaic and Nugget hops

MALT Harrington 2-Row Base Malt: Allows color and flavor from other specialty malts to come through; makes for very clean beer Caramel 45: Contributes to amber color; provides complexity Honey Malt: Contributes sweetness

HOPS Mosaic: New U.S. hop; provides floral, tropical, fruity, and earthy characteristics Nugget: U.S. bittering hop; provides floral, resiny aroma and flavor Cascade: U.S. hop with citrus characteristics for aroma

Pairs With: Smoked beef brisket, grilled lamb, sharp and rich cheeses, and sweet desserts

Shelf Life: 90 days

Rated on 7-24-2016. The appearance of this bottled beer is a medium sized semi-fizzy off-white head that is mostly lasting, bright amber transparent body, very fizzy, lively, fast rising carbonation observed, one ring of lacing. The aroma is citrus hops, light pine hops, juicy, grapefruit, fruity, spicy, earthy, and caramel malt. The flavor presents medium-heavy bitterness, citrus hops, very earthy, grapefruit, fruity, and caramel malt. The mouthfeel of this beer is heavy and moderate carbonation. This beer is medium-full bodied. A very quaffable sipping beer with a very good taste. It is worth trying and it is a beer that I would drink again.

Strong pine aroma, but one dimensional. Also some caramelly malt. Just a little hazy with amber body and a two finger thick head. Pretty sweet taste, with some of the hop flavor and a soapy bitterness at the end. Medium body.

Draught pint at ORiley & Conways Irish Pub in Janesville, WI, today. Darkish amber-bronze with a fine, delicate head leaving significant sugar-crystal residue as it and the beer recede very quicky, too quickly...super-fresh, big hoppy ripe pit-fruit nose, apricots and peaches and perhaps some mangoes, this is another indicator for me that Mosaic may be my favorite current hop variety, certainly for these strong, sweet IPAs it does the trick; also a bit of cedar or sandalwood, more complex as I take more whiffs than my initial nosing...on the front of the palate, very sweet and perhaps a touch syrupy, moderately bitter and just a very faint touch tart in the middle, with bitterness slowly growing but never dominating at the end as it would in, say, Ruination...this finishes with a highly enjoyable fruit-sweet and medium-bitter lightly dry character. Overall like many sweeter IIPAs it is a bit thick and overly juicy to my tastes, especially as it warms - which made me drink it perhaps a bit too fast - but in general the balance is solid, and this is highly drinkable and enjoyable.

12 oz. bottle from The Hop Yard, Raleigh (enjoy by July 3, 2016 so I just missed it by a few days). Dark orange pour with a frothy khaki head. Aroma of tangerine, grapefruit, wet grass, and toffee. The taste certainly features a bitter hop presence but there is a sturdy malt backbone that makes this almost akin to a barley wine. Tangerine, grapefruit rind, pine, caramel, and graham cracker are the noted flavors here. Nice beer!

Very well might be my favorite IPA Nice brown head...not too much carbonation, nice lacing. ABV is high but it doesnt overpower the delicious flavor of this brew. I will def drink this one again.
