Name Origin: On the West Coast, surfers have a term for that perfect time of day, when the waves are breaking just right and it feels like you can ride forever. They call it Alchemy Hour. In Cleveland, our surfers have to work a little harder to find a perfect swell. Dressed in wetsuits, up at dawn, they camp out on the shores of Lake Erie in near-freezing temperatures, waiting for the ultimate wave. Crazy? Yes. Extreme? Definitely. Alchemy Hour Double IPA pays tribute to the North Coast’s unlikely surf bums and the ancient quest for liquid gold, wherever it may live: on the ocean, in a lake, in a bottle.

Style Origin: Distinctively American, the Double IPA or Imperial IPA is thought to have originated in California. This fairly new style is a heartier, hoppier version of the traditional IPA with a higher alcohol content, creating a very strong and flavorful drinking experience.

Flavor: Hop-forward with a balanced blend of Mosaic and Nugget hops

MALT Harrington 2-Row Base Malt: Allows color and flavor from other specialty malts to come through; makes for very clean beer Caramel 45: Contributes to amber color; provides complexity Honey Malt: Contributes sweetness

HOPS Mosaic: New U.S. hop; provides floral, tropical, fruity, and earthy characteristics Nugget: U.S. bittering hop; provides floral, resiny aroma and flavor Cascade: U.S. hop with citrus characteristics for aroma

Pairs With: Smoked beef brisket, grilled lamb, sharp and rich cheeses, and sweet desserts

Shelf Life: 90 days

12 oz. bottle thanks to Rob B. Labeled under the “Chill wave” name. Color is orange with a golden hue, some retention. Aroma of tropical fruit and earthy hops.

Lightly sweet, malty presence upfront with the tropical fruit hops followed by hints of resin, and a dash of sugar sweetness. Finish has light earthiness with the alcohol making itself known. Medium body with light creamy carbonation and a lightly sticky texture.

Overall, a very sweet for a DIPA that still has a balanced bitterness that doesn’t overwhelm the palate. Well made

Sample draft at JJ’s as Chillwave. Orange brown color with a frothy tan head. Fruity hop aroma. Big bold hoppy pungent taste but not over done. Very good. Bold but still very drinkable.

kambei70 (1075) - - MAR 23, 2014
2014 bottle to a tulip glass. Pours a light copper color with a foamy off-white head. Aroma is big tropical fruits, particularly papaya, with some dankness and cat urine. Taste is a very sweet candied tropical fruit with a grassy and piney bitterness at the end. Not much malt taste to speak of. The bitterness stays on the tongue and has an unpleasant astringency. A medium, well carbonated mouthfeel. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Clear yellow-red color. Decent white head/lace retention throughout. Lots of piney hop, lemon citrus malt, slight toasted complexion, earthy characteristics; pine, grass, floral. Mild bitterness.

355 mL bottle - as Chillwave. (bb 05/06/14). Copper with a thin whitish head. Lots of hops in the nose - floral and citrus (lime). There is a hint of sweetness there as well. Very appealing. Big body and flavour, with citrus and resin from the hops, some caramel, and a really interesting bittersweet finish.

Amber color with very fruity scent and after taste. Feels nothing like a double ipa. Very smooth and easy to drink.
