Name Origin: On the West Coast, surfers have a term for that perfect time of day, when the waves are breaking just right and it feels like you can ride forever. They call it Alchemy Hour. In Cleveland, our surfers have to work a little harder to find a perfect swell. Dressed in wetsuits, up at dawn, they camp out on the shores of Lake Erie in near-freezing temperatures, waiting for the ultimate wave. Crazy? Yes. Extreme? Definitely. Alchemy Hour Double IPA pays tribute to the North Coast’s unlikely surf bums and the ancient quest for liquid gold, wherever it may live: on the ocean, in a lake, in a bottle.

Style Origin: Distinctively American, the Double IPA or Imperial IPA is thought to have originated in California. This fairly new style is a heartier, hoppier version of the traditional IPA with a higher alcohol content, creating a very strong and flavorful drinking experience.

Flavor: Hop-forward with a balanced blend of Mosaic and Nugget hops

MALT Harrington 2-Row Base Malt: Allows color and flavor from other specialty malts to come through; makes for very clean beer Caramel 45: Contributes to amber color; provides complexity Honey Malt: Contributes sweetness

HOPS Mosaic: New U.S. hop; provides floral, tropical, fruity, and earthy characteristics Nugget: U.S. bittering hop; provides floral, resiny aroma and flavor Cascade: U.S. hop with citrus characteristics for aroma

Pairs With: Smoked beef brisket, grilled lamb, sharp and rich cheeses, and sweet desserts

Shelf Life: 90 days

12 oz bottle of Chillwave. Pours a very nice golden color with a medium head that lasts. Aroma is of very sweet hops and a nice malt balance. Great blend of citrus, grass, and pine. Taste is smooth and well balanced. The hops are less bitter than most DIPAs and has a very sweet taste overall. Mouth feel is superbly smooth and well balanced. Some sweet fruits blend nicely with the citrus and floral notes. Very good, refreshing beer!

Location: 12 oz bottle from Sparrow, 3/15/14, as Chillwave Double IPA

Aroma: The aroma is clean and hoppy, fresh mango, pine/resin, and some grapefruit
Appearance: Pours a bright, clear, orange color, with small off-white head and some strong lace
Flavor: The flavor is clean hops, medium sweet and medium bitter, balanced and flavorful
Palate: The body is medium, it has average carbonation, and a clean, mid-dry finish
Overall Impression: This is a really nice DIPA. It has fresh and clean flavors, and a well-balanced taste overall. It isn’t the most bitter example of the style out there, but just a really tasty and nicely made example. Really enjoyed this.

Growler of Chillwave from Save On. Why did they change the name? Clear copper with lasting head and lace. Spicy orange grapefruit bready aroma. Mild tropical fruits and peachy bready sweetness with medium orangy grapefruit bitter medium dry finish. Medium-full body lively carbo accentuates hops. I like a higher attentuated dryer DIPA but still excellent.

UPDATED: MAR 13, 2015 Bottle reads chill wave. This is in fact, a shelfie. Poured 2x 12oz boostle into my man sized mug for proper chugging. Looked like clear honey in a glass with a small white head. Huge tropical fruit aroma. I’m getting grapefruit, oranges, etc. taste is not overly bitter, but also Demi sec. Flavors of huge tropical fruit, sweet but an awesome hop expression. I really love the mosaic/nugget hop combo in this beer. Not very bitter, this is a new style IPA. The only downside is the sweetness. If you can get past that, this beer is nearly flawless.

RE-RATE: Nowhere near as good as last time my untrained palate had it. Downgrading BigTime.

Bottle as Chillwave. Pours orange gold with white head. Nose and taste of grapefruit peel, spicy malt, caramel malt, orange peel, hop oils and touch of perfumy hops. Medium body.

A: Beautiful golden copper. Nice off-white that keeps for awhile. Nice lacing S: Strong Mosaic hop aroma, really pungent almost a like a pleasant skunk to it. love it. Strong tangerine and hints tropical fruits in full force. Some grass. Alcohol is well hidden nicely. T: Like the aroma good amount of tangerine with hints of pineapple and mango. Light bready and sweet caramel. Bitterness is soft, not even close to being harsh. Alcohol is still hidden. M: Lightly sweet not not alot. Light to medium body that goes down smoothly. Really nice. O: I really really love the mosaic hop, aromas and flavors are amazing. This beer is amazing, really easy to drink beer. An easy decision to be a new go to beer, hope to see this around more.

Re-named Chillwave, poured from the bottle into a pint glass. Clear amber/orange. One finger head, spotty lacing. Nose and taste have a funk that’s hard to place. Not very pleasant. No alcohol burn despite the 9.8% content. Not one I’m likely to try again after this four-pack is gone.

Draft (Chillwave re-named release) at ChurchKey poured into a tasting snifter. Pours an amber color with a nice amount of off-white head. Good lacing. Aromas of citrus, caramel, dank notes. Tasting notes of citrus, tropical fruit, light pine, citrusy hops. Medium body with a semi-dry finish. Nice juicy mouthfeel. Just a tinge of alcohol but pretty smooth for the most part. Very nice, one of my favorite offerings from Great Lakes.

Nice, well-balanced IPA. Beautiful peachy and tangerine head. Pours orange with decent head and lacing. Some nice grapefruit tinges here as well. Booze present in aroma but well integrated. Bitter finish. Tap at Rustico.

I had the bottle labeled "Chillwave Double IPA. This is the same as the Alchemy Hour. The beer poured a nice copper color with a thick lacing light beige / near white head. The aroma is pine and mint and citrus fruit. The taste is a mouth full of hops and grapefruit with a nice bittersweet finish. The alcohol gets your attention, but it is not too strong. A nicely balanced IPA..
