Name Origin: On the West Coast, surfers have a term for that perfect time of day, when the waves are breaking just right and it feels like you can ride forever. They call it Alchemy Hour. In Cleveland, our surfers have to work a little harder to find a perfect swell. Dressed in wetsuits, up at dawn, they camp out on the shores of Lake Erie in near-freezing temperatures, waiting for the ultimate wave. Crazy? Yes. Extreme? Definitely. Alchemy Hour Double IPA pays tribute to the North Coast’s unlikely surf bums and the ancient quest for liquid gold, wherever it may live: on the ocean, in a lake, in a bottle.

Style Origin: Distinctively American, the Double IPA or Imperial IPA is thought to have originated in California. This fairly new style is a heartier, hoppier version of the traditional IPA with a higher alcohol content, creating a very strong and flavorful drinking experience.

Flavor: Hop-forward with a balanced blend of Mosaic and Nugget hops

MALT Harrington 2-Row Base Malt: Allows color and flavor from other specialty malts to come through; makes for very clean beer Caramel 45: Contributes to amber color; provides complexity Honey Malt: Contributes sweetness

HOPS Mosaic: New U.S. hop; provides floral, tropical, fruity, and earthy characteristics Nugget: U.S. bittering hop; provides floral, resiny aroma and flavor Cascade: U.S. hop with citrus characteristics for aroma

Pairs With: Smoked beef brisket, grilled lamb, sharp and rich cheeses, and sweet desserts

Shelf Life: 90 days

Bottle from Dorthy Land Market. The pour is clear orange with a fresh pine hop aroma. The flavor is good, just different. Very piney with a bitter finish, and it is indeed fresh. But, it also finishes a tad hot with a medicinal taste to it. Maybe the rough edges will smooth a little over the months. Let’s hope.

12 ounce bottle at home. Hop aroma but not overwhelming. Orange tint and hazy. Thin white head with film on glass. Smooth and not overly bitter. I was surprised at this. This is pretty nice for the style

Chillwave pours a semi opaque amber and has an off-white head with minimal lacing. Upfront aromatics include raisins and lots of malt balancing the liberal dose of hops with traces of berries towards the end. It drinks smoothe for 9% ABV with little lingering bitterness. Clean, medium mouthfeel with a sugary aftertaste. Caught up with it two months passed it’s prime, but still a good IIPA.

Had this on tap at TRT and ended up bring home a growler. Absolutely love it. Excellent craftsmanship and balance. The bitterness is balanced perfectly by the malts and hop flavors. Crisp finish. Goes down quick for such a strong beer. Can’t wait for this one to come back around again.

12oz bottle. Bright deep orange color with light cream lacing. Aroma is sweet alcohol and citrus. Flavors are more grapefruit and still alcohol. Syrupy body.

Excellent IIPA. Huge amount of malt to stand up to the bold hops and yet balanced.

I normally love a double IPA but this one rubbed me the wrong way at many levels. The body was too heavy on the palate, like sugar syrup (though more bitter than sweet), the alcohol was too sharp, and the bitterness too unbalanced. Big, but I just couldn’t enjoy it. Bottle.

moderate citrus, pine, and faint malt aromas. dark gold and clear in color with nice long lasting head. taste is hop forward with notes of pine, resin, and lightly citrus. underlying rich malt notes

JPDIPSO (6300) - Wauwatosa, USA - FEB 8, 2017
Rated as Alchemy Hour Double IPA. Amber to copper color with a modest sized, beige head. Tiny bubbles. Sweet, candied and caramelized grapefruit. Some tropical fruit scents as well. A little searching shows some faint scents of pale and toffee malt. Really smooth feel. Sweeter start, with some light fruit and pale malt. Middle has a hint of honey, alcohol, and floral bitterness. Finish is quite clean, with a mild malt linger. 2/13

Bottle shared. Thanks Gregg! Lovely honey and orange marmalade nose with some earthy notes in the background. Well-balanced and has a big malt profile on the palate. Doesn’t feel overly heavy, but very drinkable. More orange marmalade character. At first a harsh bitterness, but mellows out substantially as it warms. Good stuff.
