COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Name Origin: On the West Coast, surfers have a term for that perfect time of day, when the waves are breaking just right and it feels like you can ride forever. They call it Alchemy Hour. In Cleveland, our surfers have to work a little harder to find a perfect swell. Dressed in wetsuits, up at dawn, they camp out on the shores of Lake Erie in near-freezing temperatures, waiting for the ultimate wave. Crazy? Yes. Extreme? Definitely. Alchemy Hour Double IPA pays tribute to the North Coasts unlikely surf bums and the ancient quest for liquid gold, wherever it may live: on the ocean, in a lake, in a bottle.

Style Origin: Distinctively American, the Double IPA or Imperial IPA is thought to have originated in California. This fairly new style is a heartier, hoppier version of the traditional IPA with a higher alcohol content, creating a very strong and flavorful drinking experience.

Flavor: Hop-forward with a balanced blend of Mosaic and Nugget hops

Ingredients:
MALT Harrington 2-Row Base Malt: Allows color and flavor from other specialty malts to come through; makes for very clean beer Caramel 45: Contributes to amber color; provides complexity Honey Malt: Contributes sweetness

HOPS Mosaic: New U.S. hop; provides floral, tropical, fruity, and earthy characteristics Nugget: U.S. bittering hop; provides floral, resiny aroma and flavor Cascade: U.S. hop with citrus characteristics for aroma

Pairs With: Smoked beef brisket, grilled lamb, sharp and rich cheeses, and sweet desserts

Shelf Life: 90 days

Excellent IIPA. Huge amount of malt to stand up to the bold hops and yet balanced.

I normally love a double IPA but this one rubbed me the wrong way at many levels. The body was too heavy on the palate, like sugar syrup (though more bitter than sweet), the alcohol was too sharp, and the bitterness too unbalanced. Big, but I just couldnt enjoy it. Bottle.

Rated as Alchemy Hour Double IPA. Amber to copper color with a modest sized, beige head. Tiny bubbles. Sweet, candied and caramelized grapefruit. Some tropical fruit scents as well. A little searching shows some faint scents of pale and toffee malt. Really smooth feel. Sweeter start, with some light fruit and pale malt. Middle has a hint of honey, alcohol, and floral bitterness. Finish is quite clean, with a mild malt linger. 2/13

Bottle shared. Thanks Gregg! Lovely honey and orange marmalade nose with some earthy notes in the background. Well-balanced and has a big malt profile on the palate. Doesnt feel overly heavy, but very drinkable. More orange marmalade character. At first a harsh bitterness, but mellows out substantially as it warms. Good stuff.

Pours deep orange, closing on amber maybe. Aroma is not really floral or fruit - hops are more from the earthy and slightly harsher side. For some reason reminds me Phjalas Phja Konn. Body is malty, nicely fragrant - which is unusual for such a big beer - and masterfully balanced with the earthy hop profile. Glad I could try this!

Beautiful double. Copper color. Thin white head. Great lacing. Nose is tropical, but flavor is more resinous. Well balanced bitterness vs malt. High ABV is well hidden. No booziness in the finish. Yeah Cleveland!

Picked up single 12-oz bottle from Heritage Liquors in Maplewood, MN as Alchemy Hour Double IPA. Pours a semi-clear golden orange colored brew with an average sized off-white head that slowly dissipates and leaves behind some excellent lacing. Aroma of light grapefruit, tangerine, more tropical fruits and caramel malt. Taste is medium bodied with flavors of a solid tropical fruit-style IPA. Finish is semi-sweet with a lingering bitterness. Will turn into an American style barleywine if not drank fresh. Tongue shock recovery time, about 3 minutes.
