COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Part of their Tank Ten Series, a barrel-aged Barley Wine aged in Four Roses Bourbon barrels. First things first – This beer has been brewed for, and meant to be, aged. While it’s tasty right now, it will be best with a years worth of appropriate aging. If you want to age longer, do so by all means as Beard of Zeus Barrel-Aged Barley Wine will mature nicely for up to five years. Now, the taste! The beer is mahogany in colour with some ruby red hues shining through under the tan head. Aromas of dried fruits, plums and a touch of warming alcohol. Much the same in taste: dried fruits, cherry and plum, sweet malt with soft notes of vanilla and toffee. The Four Roses bourbon barrels that were used to age this beer for one year give the barley wine a lot of character, which comes through nicely in the finish. THE NAME: Kyle’s* Barley Wine recipe is a big one for sure. We figured we’d take it up a notch by bourbon barrel-aging it for close to a year. Perhaps, not surprisingly, the beer is bigger, more bourbon and more barrely than the original recipe. Our friend Kyle approves. *Brewed in collaboration with Toronto Beer Week homebrew winner, Kyle Teichart.

Alpha10 (883) - Ontario, CANADA - MAR 17, 2017
2017/03/17 - Pours a hazy amber brown colour with a thin, foamy, khaki head that quickly dissipates and leaves moderate, spotty lacing. Fantastic aroma; sweet toffee and molasses, bready notes, dark fruits (plumbs, figs), chocolate and tons of oaky-vanilla-bourbon. Taste is toffee, caramel, roasted malt, plumbs, vanilla and big oaky bourbon. Mouthfeel is medium and oily with smooth carbonation and a sweet, warming finish. Bourbon has some heat on it. Very nice. I'm glad I let this cellar for a few years before drinking. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

neuromatt (1226) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - JAN 3, 2015
650 mL bottle courtesy of Kennedy & Susan, served in a snifter. Pours clear ruby-chestnut with a small tan head that fades to a thin cover and leaves a small amount of fine lace. The nose has huge oaky notes, along with molasses, vanilla, caramel, chocolate, plum and dried fruit. The flavour is intensely sweet with molasses, toffee, caramel, vanilla, chocolate and fruit, along with a huge bourbon character. The finish is long and malty with oak, vanilla and caramel. On the palate it is medium in body with a smooth, oily texture and soft carbonation. Overall, a respectable bourbon barrel-aged barley wine, with much of the complexity coming from the barrel. The underlying recipe could offer somewhat more complex malts. 2015-01-03

[6914-20141115] 650mL bottle. Woody grainy aroma. Hazy, dark brown body with a quick foamy off-white head. Boozy grainy woody flavour has a vanilla undertone. Medium-full body. Good. (7/3/8/4/15) 3.7

2014-11-15. Very dark brown, small brown head fades. 3+ Big sweet aroma, lots of bourbon and vanilla character. Sweet caramel malt. 8+ flavour is similar, rich sweet malt core with even more bourbon, lingering sweet vanilla in the finish. Tasty but overly heavy to put in a bomber. 7++ smooth medium to full bodied palate with soft carbonation. Solid take on what it is but the bourbon and vanilla dominate jut a bit too much for my own tastes. We drank it too early based on the sticker on the bottle indicating Best AFTER Dec 31, 2014! (On tap at A Night with GLB and Amsterdam Brewery @ Bar Hop, Sept 14 2014) Pours very dark brown with a tiny white head. Aroma driven by Four Roses barrels, with a dark stewed fruit and toffee malt core underneath. Slight nuttiness. The palate is sweet initially, port wine, light wood, toasted nuts. In the middle lots of booze hits along with the bourbon barrel, and the alcohol dries the beer out. Finish has lingering whiskey, sweetness from dark fruit and toffee. Full, syrupy palate. This barley wine has huge potential, but at least on draught it came across as being rather too young and hot. All the components are there and it will mellow into a beauty. Wish I had scored a bottle or two to sock away.

650ml bottle. Pours a dark ruby with a thin, khaki head. Aroma has big notes of bourbon, hints of dark fruit, caramel, and a touch of roast. Taste is sweeter but with a good bitterness to balance it out. Bourbon, vanilla, caramel, dark fruits, and a medium alcohol taste. Full body with a medium carbonation. Super smooth in the mouth with a dry finish. Overall a really nice beer. Sweet bourbon, dark fruits, caramel, and vanilla. Worth trying for sure.

[Bottle (650ml)] Pours amber-brown with an average size frothy off-white head. Some lacing on the glass. Aroma of chocolate, vanilla, bourbon, wood, light hops and dark fruit. Flavour is lovely, with deep caramel malt, some wood, brown sugar, vanilla, bourbon and a hint of hops. Medium bodied. Barrel-aging done right, quite good.

mcberko (20305) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - AUG 2, 2014
650mL bottle, pours a dark mahogany with a small beige head. Aroma brings out a shitload of bourbon barrels, followed by vanilla, and a touch of booze. Flavour is quite hot but well-rounded, with shitloads of complex bourbon, vanilla, and oak, with a touch of booze. But the ABV is amazingly well-hidden for 13%. Very complex and drinkable for what it is.
