toffsbury (118) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - SEP 28, 2012
One of my favourite beers. Aroma is rich and sweet, with caramel, coffee, bourbon and chocolate. The colour is a perfect midnight black, completely opaque, with quite a decent head. Flavour is seriously intense... Sweet with a bare hint of bitter, bourbon, roasted coffee and candy apple chocolate. Of you just leave it sitting on your tongue for five minutes it tastes like you’re sipping on coffee - not coffee aftertaste, but actual coffee. I wish they’d put this in the LCBO. I had to call repeatedly and then bike to the brewery to buy it. kevinsenn (2215) - Waterloo, Ontario, CANADA - SEP 28, 2012
Bottle courtesy of toffsbury. Pours completely opaque black, with a tan head. Aroma of bourbon, vanilla, and roasted malt. Taste is great! Marshmallowy roasty goodness. Great big body. This is very good stuff. GuillaumeCL (344) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - JUN 24, 2012
750mL bottle from the brewery. Pours straight black with a bit of brown head that dissipates and rings quickly. Wow can you ever smell the bourbon in that with some cocoa and vanilla to mix in nicely. Palate is excellent, medium to heavy body with some moderate carbonation with fine bubbles. Taste is pretty good with some initial sweetness that mellows nicely and has a slight bourbon and hops aftertaste. I wish I had an unlimited supply of this, it’s fantastic! 750 mL bottle from the brewery. Poured a lovely ruby brown with a medium, sticky. brown head. The aroma is all about the barrel, with some mocha undertones. Flavour packs a real punch. Wood and porter flavours merge nicely, and they’ve somehow upped the booze by a percentage point. Good body. JoeMcPhee (9427) - Toronto, ON, Ontario, CANADA - MAY 28, 2012
Deep dark black pour with a creamy dark brown head. The aroma is intense - loads of rich cocoa, dark chocolate and leather as well as an overtone of vanilla and sweet bourbon. A fairly pronounced dry plum and date aroma along with some light coffeeish character. Rich and tasty stuff.

(Draught sample at Bryden’s, Toronto, Sept 21 2012) Pours black with a cream-coloured head that disippated quickly with strong lacing. Aroma barrel-dominated, bourbon, woody vanilla and alcohol. Bit of cocoa and roast in behind. Flavour again bourbon and vanilla dominated, a bit more chocolate and toffee character comes through from the porter. Somewhat sweet but not overpoweringly so, faint drying from roast and hops on the finish. Body is fairly full with creamy carbonation and well-hidden alcohol heat. This beer comes across as whiskey with a beer hiding, but it smells and tastes great and is easy to drink. Spab (3850) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - JUL 12, 2012
Bottle from brewery. Pours an ultra-dark brown with large-sized tan head head. Aroma is dark chocolate and molasses with leathery/woody barrel and even a little vanillaish sweetness. Flavour is a little roastier and the mild sweetness doesn’t come through as much with the barrel notes dominating a little more. Fine carbonation. Quite nice. Tap, pours a nice pitch black, aroma is very strong of bourbon a bit roasty, the flavour is very strong on the bourbon as well, a nice roasty coco body, finish with a heavy boozy feel. But really complex overall and really nice offering, better as warms jercraigs (10374) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - MAY 30, 2012
UPDATED: JUL 10, 2012 2012-07-06. Black body with a modest tan head that fades a bit. 3+ Modest aroma, sweet dark malt with mild whisky overtones and hints of treacle and caramel. 7+ Flavour is similar, good amount of bourbon overtones but the support of the sweet dark base malt keeps it from becoming too overwhelming. Hints at sweet caramel and toffee, a bourbon note that has a nuance to it that I can’t define beyond "caramel and treacle" but that is not quite right, perhaps vanilla influenced? 7+ Smooth medium bodied palate. Pretty solid, it is relatively dominated by the bourbon barrel but I feel like the base beer has stood up to it a bit better than I recall in the Project X version. 7+/4/7+/4/16 - 3.8 Bottle from the brewery.radiomgb (2686) - Peterborough, Ontario, CANADA - JUL 22, 2012
2012-04-12. Black body with a very small tan head and lace. 3+ Sweet bourbony aroma, modest vanilla character grows as you go, and as it warms. 7+ Flavour is sweet bourbony vanilla. Smooth average plus to medium bodied palate. 3+ Decent I enjoyed this in a small glass, but I found it too bourbony and one dimensional to drink more than that, but that is personal taste. A blend of this and the Anniversary porter might have been rather good. 7/3/7/3/14-15 3.5 On tap? at Project X, Victory Cafe, Toronto
Deep black in colour with a tan head, good lacing, excellent retention. The aroma is a little lackluster, not a whole lot of anything going on with just a bit of sweetness. The flavour is of bourbon, vanilla, light smoke, dark chcolate and coffee. Bitter mouthfeel, medium body, moderate carbonation. Finishes long, burnt and sweet.
Nicely done, I love the one off’s from Great Lakes.
On tap at St. Veronus in Peterborough, Ontario.
