Doing things out of order. Just finished a Harry Porter curse of the Bourbon Vanilla Bean (or that is at least how I saw it.) Now to the original. Pours equally as dark as the bean version, but with a tan head that sticks around in a sheet. Nose is full of malts roasted with a little ash, and quite a bit of chocolate sweetness. (Here is hoping its not to like its overly sweet Vanilla version.) The taste ... much nicer. Not overly sweet. Lots of roasted malts, with some of that ashy-ness. Sweet, but not excessively so, with a good load of chocolate, finishing with a little hop bitterness. Not bad. More proof that sequels are never as good as the original.

Tap at Cheshire Cat. Pours cola black with lots of head and some lacing. Nose is roasted and dark fruit. Taste medium sweet, medium bitter. Medium body with lively carbonation. Nice beer!

Can - 473ml. Opaque black body with an average, lasting beige foamy head. Good malty/hoppy aroma with chocolate and roasty hints. Its robust malty/hoppy taste carries roasted coffee, oaky, brown sugar, and plummy notes. Ends with a long, strong bitter/roasty finish. Good stuff.

Can from the brewery. Pitch black with tan head. Nose is sweet cola, chocolate and roasted malt. On the taste I get some sweet sugary malt, cola, vanilla, and a roasty chocolate finish.

On the nose some nice burnt coffee and dark chocolate. Taste wise, while those same flavours are coming through, there is a surprising sweetness on the back of the tongue. This is not a bitter Porter. Liked this one quite a bit

On tap at Bar Hop (Toronto). Dark brown with mocha head. Chocolate, vanilla, hint of smoke, quite sweet, underlying semi-roasted malt. High carbonation, mild+ body, chocolate cake with a hint of hazelnut, sweet but dry on finish, reminds me of Rogue Chocolate Stout.
