Deep black/brown pour. Nose has a lot of coffee and some toasted brown malt. Chile is barely present - just a faint whiff of something fruity but the coffee comes out nicely on the palate. Moderate roastiness and a bit of sticky sweetness on the back. Nice beer. neongolden (1649) - Linköping, Sweden/Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - SEP 16, 2013
(Draught at Brydens, Sept 15 2013) Pours a solid black with a decent-sized dark tan head, quite fluffy and persistent with lace left over. Aroma has chocolate, light roast coffee, rather smoky (but not woody, ancho smoky), slightly peppery and a bit herbal. Flavour starts just slightly sweet, roast malts, chocolate, dark coffee, a little bit of oats. Then the ancho peppers kick in, and contribute a large helping of peppery smoke with just a little associated spice. It’s enough, along with a little hops, to really dry the beer out completely. From mid-palate on it’s somewhat astringent/acidic and cuts any creaminess out of the beer. Finish is bone dry, a bit spicy, smoky, slightly bitter. Mouthfeel is fairly light though creamy at first, carb light in character if a touch high. No alcohol. Quite a good stout, the ancho chilies here are contributing more smoke than spice, but it’s not the smoke character of your typical smoked stout. One is enough, but one is quite enjoyable. Can’t imagine it at breakfast though, maybe a late brunch?! HogTownHarry (6872) - Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, CANADA - JUL 28, 2012
March 12, 2011 - Great Lakes Tap Take-over at Volo. Draught. Pours black - nice lightly fluffy tan lasting head. Aroma - terrific; cocoa, sweetened strong coffee, fairly lush herbal bitterness, hardly any alcohol presence - really good balance (coffee stout - yes!!). The taste follows right on - dry, almost like cocoa nibs, the peppery character wasn’t there on the nose but it comes through nicely in the taste - and even more coffee, less sweetness - some alcohol comes into it, and it seemed mostly a oily dark chocolate / strong coffee melange ... creamy, thickish, light airy carbonation, finishes dry, bitter and a little acidic (probably from the chili?). Really solid stuff - would have this again for sure. manuchampions (1244) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - APR 1, 2011
Sample at GLB Volo tasting. Pours a solid black with off white, fairly persistent head. Aroma is chocolate malt, some spiciness and a msyterious funk. Taste is certainly like a bonfire, roasted almost burnt malt, smokiness. The roast lingers along with the overpowering spice. Not bad nut not my cup of tea. On tap at Volo, nice work Jordan. Pours an opaque black, very dark, thick light brown head, some lacing sticks, looks pretty good. Smell is nice, big coffee roast, some brown sugar and biscuit, a bit of dark fruit, espresso beans, light vanilla, caramel, nice. Taste is similar, nice coffee roastiness up front, some malty sweetness, bit of vanilla wafer, biscuit and espresso roast in the finish. Pretty thin in the body, really the only downfall. Tastes like Peche Mortel lite. Great stuff!

Flavor and Palate : Very dry coffee feel , charcoal ,with grainy texture. Mid accented by dark chocolate , followed by mild hint of Scotch and Vanilla. Quiet tasty offering.
Draught at Volo. Pours a very dark brown, almost black, with an average size semi-lasting fizzy light-brown head. Aroma is big-time coffee along with some sweet roasted malt. Flavour is also lots of coffee along with roasted malt and...not much else -- nice though. Medium bodied. Quite good, if you like coffee. tomthompson89 (1982) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - MAR 14, 2011
