Great Lakes Class of '88 Imperial Smoked Porter

RATINGS: 54   WEIGHTED AVG: 3.49/5   SEASONAL: Special   IBU: 50   EST. CALORIES: 270   ABV: 9%
Deschutes is well-known for their award-winning Black Butte Porter, and because our Edmund Fitzgerald Porter is also a well-loved and decorated beer, it made perfect sense for us to combine our forces to create a kind of super-porter. And so, the Class of ’88 Imperial Smoked Porter was born. We both opted to use our house yeast, and of course local water makes a huge difference in the flavor, but otherwise both beers utilized the same recipe, which includes a mix of several roasted and smoked malts and muscovado sugar.

close to the same as the Deschutes version...different feel and not quite as sweet. Smoke is quite similar and both are pretty good!

Draught at the Deschutes Brewpub in Portland, OR on 23 May 2013. Poured a very dark brown with a dense tan head. Aroma of cocoa nibs, smoked malt and molasses. Smoked peat in the initial flavour with notes of dark chocolate and coffee. Good, thick mouth feel. Finish was nice and bitter with roasted malt and some liquorice sweetness.

Bottle. smoke is the first thing I taste. Then a second of porter then smoke again. Not what I expected.

Had a glass on tap at stones throw. Wow, delicious, big but balanced, medium smoke, quite round, slightly sweet.

Draft. Cola colored with an off white head. Aroma is leathery and smoky. Taste follows suit and adds some nice cherry and chocolate notes. Thick oily palate that sticks in the mouth. Very nice.

On tap at Stubby’s. Dark ruby brown thin brown head gone. Aroma is very smoky and roasty with some salty notes. Taste picks up plenty of smoked malts with light chocolate and finishes up sweet.

(draft @ MacGregor’s - Henrietta, NY) Dark black pour with a thick tan head. Smokey aroma with a mild roasted chocolate and burnt malt undertone. Smokey flavor at the start that moves to a roasted malt and coffee finish. Some sugar sweetness and roasted chocolate at the end.

Sampled on tap at Timothy O’Toole’s in Gurnee as part of the birthday extravaganza with ck1, thanks bro! Pours a dark brown with little head. Aroma has heavy peat with caramel and smoke. Taste follows. Very scotch ale-y and not very porter-y, which is a shame as Edmund is world class as one of the components. ck1 said 12 as well.
