Light golden color, with an average smell, taste, and mouthfeel. The disappointmet comes after you swallow: a bad bitter aftertaste lingers until you take another sip (or gulp, depending on the situation). This isn't a beer that I'd drink on a regular basis, but once in awhile, if I really get bored, I might give this another try. But then again the GLBC has so many other great beers. Very good beer here. A nice light lager but still has a lot of taste. Goes down smooth as well and doesn't have that strong of an aftertaste. redlem (1306) - Ohio, USA - JAN 6, 2004
Clear gold, nicely carbonated, medium light white head. Slight pepper bread aroma and taste. Crisp, clean, and refreshing. raindog (560) - Evansville, Indiana, USA - NOV 17, 2003
Note:one week past date. Clear golden. Medium sized head. Lasting with little lace.Quite enticing malty, hoppy, lagerish aroma. Fizzy mouthfeel, but not to the point of offense. Light malty flavors lead to the finish. Quite grassy finish. Just barely tastes out of date. I look forward to a fresh one, because I quite liked this. Ellbert (7) - USA - NOV 1, 2003 does not count
This beer was nothing special. It had a decent look, nice golden color with a white head that quickly went away.
The smell was very grainy. The taste was also the same. It had a characteristic that was all its own and I can't really put my finger on it.
Not a beer I would drink again.

Bottled. Poured a light yellow color, with a nice white colored head. I drank this beer after exercising and it was a great thirst quenching beer. There was a mild sweetness to the flavor but not much else. I didn't get a lot of hops like other raters, however my sample was 23 days past the "Best By" date. jayme9874 (756) - Hamburg, New York, USA - SEP 6, 2003
Clear golden, decent head, very little lace. Clean, fresh malt aroma, hints of grass, spicey hop and hay. Sweet malt upfront interplays nicely with tangy hops and grassy hay. A good Helles. hotstuff (5143) - Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA - AUG 24, 2003
The Rathskeller Wine & Beer Fest:A small sized white head that contained of fine sized bubbles. The body was clear and the hue was straw yellow. The nose of this beer was malty, hoppy, fruity, sweet and spicy. The flavor was bitter tasting and the mouthfeel was tingly, smooth and light-medium bodied. Ubiquibeer (140) - Cleveland, USA - AUG 17, 2003
Golden Helles color. White head. Mild hop and malt aroma. Rich malty taste. Neither hops or malt overpowering in this beer, but this is a Helles, not a dreadnaught IPA--supposed to be subtle. Mild yet still rich and drinkable. Not a standout beer yet not a drain pour. Dortmunder gold is better, yet somehow I suspect that this beer exhibits exactly the character that it was meant to by the brew masters at Great Lakes. A fine beer and a good representation of the style. CaptainCougar (7133) - Columbia, Maryland, USA - AUG 14, 2003
Clear golden with a puffy white head. Weak musty hop and dry malt aroma. Standard dry, bland lager body. Little flavor, but smooth. A little disappointed by Great Lakes on this beer.
