Often referred to as Burning River Pale Ales big brother, this stock ale is remarkably balanced for such a highly hopped beer. A rich deep blood red color makes this beer scary enough to be served every Halloween and a few other times of the year.

Trasparent red pour with carbonation bubbles constantly rising from the bottom in a chapaigne like manner to feed the medium-sized tan head. Aroma is sour hops and some bread. In the mouth it is a bit thin up front with a smooth malt middle and a long lingering bitter grapefruit finish. If you enjoy the "Bastard" series of ales offered by Stone but find them too strong to be session ales then this should be your thing.

Bottle. Pours a deep reddish amber. Not nearly the red, blood like color as indicated in the commercial description. That was actually a disappointment as I was looking forward to seeing a color like that. Malt on the nose. Flavors of vanilla, malt and fruit with some hoppiness. It had a thick mouthfeel and flavors inproved as the beer warmed. A gift from Beervana.

We have a beautiful pour here...caramel colored, with a thick light brown head. Aroma only got hoppy when the glas was agitated. Otherwise, the aromais largely tart with corn accents. Flavor is full with a solid balance, that only shifted and thickened when warm. Finish is sweet with moderate hoppiness. Interesting and fresh.

This beer offers a nice hearty aroma of roasted hops. It fills the glass with a cinnamon colored solution that sits under a thick wheat colored head. This thin beer spreads well enticing the entire mouth with its bitter but sweet taste of hops. This beer allows the taste to be enjoyed long after it smoothly faded away.

UPDATED: APR 9, 2006 Someone cracked this at my party though didnt actually drink any of it so at least I had some to drink warm...

Deep, rich amber pour with a very nice head, even at 72 degrees. Aroma is very hoppy and nice. Flavor is much more balanced though still highlighting citrusy hops of the nice malt finish. Nice bitterness and a rich creamy palate make this a very nice beer.

note: drunk

UPDATED: MAR 16, 2006 (02.08.06) 12 oz brown bottle from Archer Liquors. 8% ABV. Bottle labeled as best before 10/07/05. Batch 22688e. Clear red-orange hued ale having a small white head. Soft carbonation. Rich malt and hop aroma. Medium bodied beer that starts with light malt sweetness and pronounced hop/grapefruit flavors. Finishes dry and clean with traces of grapefruit flavor and light hop bitterness. Well-balanced beer with notable hop flavor and bitterness. A very good stock ale.

12 oz bottle. Deep copper body, clear, with a small but firm off-white head. Resiny hop aroma with some grainy malt showing through. There are some positive malt aspects of caramel and toffee. Mostly harsh bitter citric hops up front in the flavor, with a bitter then caramel sweet finish. Rather muddled and generic flavor with a high test alcoholic finish. Medium bodied with fizzy carbonation, slightly sticky on the finish. Overall, nothing about this lights up my palate.

Bottle obtained via trade with beeryum. Pours dark amber with a slightly hazy appearance and a thick off-white head. Interesting aroma of caramel, floral citrusy hops and a touch of ovaltine(!) Very bold and flavorful. Notes of caramel, toasted malt, toffee and then grapefruity piney hops. Very well balanced. Pleasantly sweet, plenty of hop bitterness in there as well. Alcohol content very well hidden. Full round an creamy on the palate with moderate carbonation. Lacing hangs on the glass in broken sheets, great head retention. Good stuff.

Deep orange and red color. Somewhat hoppy, grassy (alpha king-like) nose, which is interesting. Sweet cedar and plum scented. Very sweet and somewhat dry as well. Cherry wood, cedar wood, plums and red grapes around within a mildly spicy Belgian-like yeast.
