Round and malty, our doppelbock lager (German for "double bock") celebrates the style originally developed by medieval monks. Just as the monks appreciated this hearty brew in the late winter/early spring, we savor the flavors of this rich beer along with a double dose of our favorite pastime, rock and roll. In keeping with the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516, this beer is traditionally brewed from all natural ingredients: barley, hops, yeast and water. No chemicals or preservatives are used.

12 oz bottle poured into a cheater pint, sample about a month past its freshness date A: 1/4" foamy off white head with good retention, mahogany amber color, lots of carbonation S: sweet nose, dark fruit, hint of flower hop T: malt and caramel sweetness upfront, notes of cherry and raisin, flowery hops in the mix M: full bodied, chewy mouth

"this will not be my highest rated GL beer, but may speak the loudest of how good this brewer is. why, you ask? this beer was ordered on-line in September. Unfortunately, the ass-clowns at France44 like to sell expired beer. After having an expired Commodore Perry, which was ok, but had faded quite a bit, an obviously old but undated Surly Furious, we had this...expired as of 6/12/11!! WTF?! (10/11) Surprisingly enough, it smelled incredible. Similar malt profile and aroma to Great Divide Hibernation, my favorite winter beer. The only ill effects were in the feel (overcarbonated, but still nice n rich) and a very slight off aftertaste. But this beer is still quite good. Me thinks it would be one of the best in style around a few months fresher. I’ll make it a point to track one down."

(bottle - 12 oz) Dark copper pour with a thin head. Big malty aroma with lots of dark fruits and raisins. Flavor is thick, sticky, sweet and malty. Lots of caramel, toffee and dark fruit hints. A bit tangy on the aftertaste.

Poured from bottle into pint glass

Appearance – Pours a reddish-brown color with a billowing tan head. The head had big carbonation bubbles entrapped within and eventually faded to give a nice level of lacing.

Smell – The sweet is heavy of dark bread. Roasted malt with a good helping of sweeter molasses and some light dark fruit aromas of prune are all in the mix creating a nice aroma overall.

Taste – A big bready flavor meets the tongue. It starts out more mild in roast flavors and instead had a good level of brown sugar sweetness. The brown sugar became more molasses as the taste advanced with some notes of dark fruit entering the taste. Overall the sweetness is rather lighter then at the beginning and at the same time the bread flavor takes on a heavier roast taste as well. These flavors transitioned very smoothly and in the end, when mixed with a lighter alcohol flavor, left a very satisfying, slightly warming, feeling on the tongue. Fantastic!!!

Mouthfeel –The body is slightly chewy with a very low level of carbonation. These two characteristics allow the flavors to sit on the tongue and allow that wonderful aftertaste to linger.

Overall – One tasty brew. It has great flavors, a wonderful smell and feel and gives you the perfect warming feeling, making it one to sit back, sip and enjoy.

Overall, an average double bock that lacks any real solid flavor of a typical dopple bock.

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a mug. The label has a nice description of the beer and lists the abv. (7.8%) and has a freshness date of "06/01/11".

Appearance: The body is very dark with deep reddish highlights and is capped by a tall light tan head. The head is slow fading and it slowly settles to a light ring of slick lace at the edge of the glass. Some lacing is left on the glass at the top.

Smell: Its aroma has sweet caramel and dark fruit notes with herbal/botanical hop notes. I also get a light boozy character and a slight hint of mineral.

Taste/Palate: There is a nice solid bready and doughy malty sweetness with notes of caramel and slight hints of fruit like dates, fig and plum. This is surrounded by a big warm booziness and backed up by earthy and herbal hops bitterness. I also pick up that slight mineral edge as well. The palate is smooth, almost creamy with a firm medium to full body and medium carbonation.

Notes: Overall I feel it’s a well made and very tasty Doppelbock. Its only set back is the heavy alcoholic warmth and this will probably mellow just right with a little age.

Oh. Well. I guess I should have looked at the best before date (06/12/11 -- it’s now 08/27/13). A Roger Wilco special! I promise, Great Lakes, I respect your product and will revisit this once the new batch is distributed to my state. But this one’s getting ticked! Sweet nose of dark toffee and caramel, sweet red berry, light dough, some spice, very inviting! Cloudy, murky dark brown with amber-red highlights and a short tan head. Taste very, very sweet but not cloying, light and deft bitterness but generally swept to the side, red berry with light spice and very good malt depth (all sorts of nice roast and faintly burnt notes in the deep bg). Faint fresh grass and low-level butterscotchy diacetyl, which I find to be a pleasant and positive rounding element here. Alcohol hidden as if it were not here, and semi-crisp medium-full body is just about right for style. This has held up amazingly well -- if it were drier, I would rank it among the best DBs in country, perhaps in the world!

Pours a lightish brown with some mahogany overtones and a small off white head. Nose is malty and nutty and sweet. Similar flavor with a bittersweet finish. A tad boozy at the end, but a solid lager.

Nose of toasty brown bread light sweetness a little dark fruit and roast. Touch of hops. Pours dark brown auburn red hues. Thin off white head. Flavors of dark fruit toasted brown bread roast light bitterness. Really good balanced dopplebock. Very solid.
