Editor’s Note: The 6.5% abv European version is listed under St Feuillien

Our second collaboration with Brasserie St-Feuillien, Friendship Brew, is a Black Saison that blends European and American hops, Belgian yeast and a cache of secret spices. The aroma and flavors are enticing, with delicate fruitiness, subtle spice and rounded roast malt characteristics. Bottle conditioning provides lively carbonation and rich beer foam for a luscious body and a lean, dry finish.

Pours jet black with a nice foamy white head that lingers and leaves a nice residue. Smells of raisin and black licorice. Gf said smelled fruity. I though the former aromas were more prominent though. Taste is just as the smell. Quite yeasty. Unique flavor. Honestly had no expectation for this brew. Didn’t even know it was going to be black. I’d recommend it, just wouldn’t buy it myself again.

Bottle from a trade with cbkschubert. Pours black with tan head. Earthy and spicy aroma. Funky and earthy flavor like a saison and spiced like a Christmas beer. Light to medium body with lively carbonation. The flavor combinations don’t really work for me. Thanks Craig.

Bottle @ Brewdog Bar, Edinburgh. Pours dark brown to black with just a chink of light going through it. Nice head. The nose has the farmyard flavour expected from saison and just a hint of chocolate from the dark malt. The taste is biscuity and farmyardy and some lemony hops on the end. The palate is medium bodied with a tangy texture and quite a clean finish. Overall, interesting but I think it could be executed a bit better than this.

Bottle. Poured a dark brown/black with a little bit of a tan head. I was really let down by this. Very thin, kinds watery, a bit spicy but had a really disappointing finish. I was able to get through the bottle but didn’t really enjoy it.

Bottle from mane liquor. Pours a jet black with a tanned frothy head. Nose is quite zesty with spices, nutmeg, orange and smoke. Taste has loads of spice and bread malts. Farmhouse yeast just smashes the palate, quite spicy. Dark sugars in there too making the taste quite sweet. Maybe plumb in There as well. Carbonation quite high. Pretty decent beer ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Now that I know the style, I like this beer better, however, I still don’t like it. Beer is really spicy and not in a good way, IMO. Not sure how good the base beer was to begin with, but the spiciness got out of control for my taste buds. I will probably finish the bottle, but will not purchase another one.

Bottle @ DØE / Hop-Head.dk tasting. Pours black with a creamy light brown head. Aroma of roasted malt, yeast, and very spicy, ginger, anis. Flavor is malts, yeast, licorice, light smoke, again very spicy, especially ginger. Thin to medium body, lively carbonation. Overly spiced and messy beer. 230113

Pours dark brown with a thin wispy light brown head. Notes of clove, brown sugar, toffee, rum, cinnamon. Medium to full bodied with lush carbonation. Like anchor osa with more belgian styled yeastiness.

Pours a deep almost black with a tan bubbly/creamy head that left sticky lacing. Aroma of molasses, star anise, peppery belgian yeast character, hints of chocolate and some citrusy notes. Flavor of light molasses notes, dark chocolate, star anise and some other various spices. Spicy belgian yeast character and nice and dry like a saison should be.

Had on tap at Ale House. Pours a blackish toned hue with a fluffy beige head, started two to three fingers then gradually sank to half a pinky. Smells and tastes of ash/cigarette smoke, mold, leaves, hops and yeast. Ends with plastic and strange spices. ...okay.
