Editor’s Note: The 6.5% abv European version is listed under St Feuillien

Our second collaboration with Brasserie St-Feuillien, Friendship Brew, is a Black Saison that blends European and American hops, Belgian yeast and a cache of secret spices. The aroma and flavors are enticing, with delicate fruitiness, subtle spice and rounded roast malt characteristics. Bottle conditioning provides lively carbonation and rich beer foam for a luscious body and a lean, dry finish.

Pitch black with a lush pillowy khaki head. Nose was funky and spicy, like an old dusty basement with tones of bone-dry trappist yeast, black peppercorn, an herbal spiciness, roast grains, and a subtlety of hay. Taste was a little peppery and a little too dry for my tastes. A little too roasty too. But in its own unique way, it comes together really well. Black grain roastiness combines with dry dusty basement yeast and cobwebs, spicy herbal bitterness, very earthy and spicy overall...Not sure what to think. Very well put together, but not for me.

22oz bottle in a tulip. Pours almost black with a lacy, beige head. Aroma of dark malts and light fruits and spices that sort of come together to form a soap-like aroma, the spicy yeast, and floral and citrusy hops. Flavor the same. Average texture. An interesting beer, but the elements don’t blend well.

On the fifth day of Christmas. Pours black with an ash colored head. Aroma is roast, herbs, dark chocolate and mint. Taste is sweet with bitter astringent finish. Medium bodied with smooth texture. I enjoyed, I got more spicy roast then the mint...very.reminiscenct of a black ipa

22oz bottle. Dark brown with a big, foamy, tan head. Aroma of spicy yeast esters, anise and chocolate. Flavor is anise, dry cocoa, spicy/zesty yeast with well hidden alcohol. Medium body with a long, dry finish. Different beer, like a dry, spicy stout/saison.

Bottle at Total Wine Tucson. Crazy dark pour almost reminiscent of a dry stout. Sweet and spicy aroma. Big bold flavor that starts with piney hops and finishes with some coffee. Nice and reminded me of a Fantome creation.

Tap. Near black with small head. Malty as a stout, but light mouthfeel. Mild funk. Delicious.

Bottle at tuulensuu, tampere. Almost black color, hint of red. Light brown head vanishes quickly. Quite weird aroma of hops, tobacco and licorice. Multiform taste of hops, roasted hops, carbonation, licorice, belgian-style sweetness and spices. Medium aftertaste, dry finish. With better body this would be awesome, now it’s nice.

On draught at Max’s Tap House, Baltimore 4/12/2012. Opaque and dark brown with a tight, off-white head. Aroma of fruit cake, orange peel, ginger and floral hops. Full-bodied mouth feel with plenty more fruit, peppery hops and a dryish finish. Very good.

Botella. Black colour, huge nicely creamy rick steady thick dark brown head, really good looking! Pleasant roasted maltiness with spice and dark fruit and a good tartness in the aroma. Good filling mouthfeel. Well roasted maltiness with spices, licorice, dark fruits, caramel and a pleasant tartness. Yum!

Bottle. Wow, didn’t expect such a dark monster. There’s a nice, low-key herbal aroma. But on the first sip, you’re overtaken with some big garden-born green vegetables and spice. Quite floral and earthy, dominated by sage (?). Easy-drinking body. (#4854, 12/9/2012)
