East Village Pilsner -
What Fizzy Yellow Beer should be!

I believe that "Fizzy Yellow Beer" can and should be full of life and flavor unlike domestic mass produced, mundane, lifeless, boring, bland, fizzy yellow, insipid swill that takes up cooler space and tap handles at our local markets, pubs and restaurants. San Diego’s East Village is full of life and Green Flash is adding flavor to this burgeoning neighborhood with "East Village Pilsner". It’s made from premium European Pilsner Malt and Noble Hops. Traditional Pilsner lager yeast ferments the beer and imparts a clean flavor, yet unique character during the one-month lagering period. Of course our East Village Pilsner has a bit more hop than even the best European examples, which makes it truly a Green Flash Original. 5.3% ABV – 35 IBUs.

lamas (1639) - Washington DC, USA - OCT 21, 2013
Draft at Snallygaster 2013. Poured a clear gold with a small off-white head. The aroma featured some lemons, citrus rinds, faint grapefruit, a sweet graininess, a little grass, and some light floral qualities. Went down thin and crisp. The clean taste started with some semi-sweet graininess and finished with some lemon and light citrus rinds. There was a mild spiciness present from beginning to end. Very nicely done and quite sessionable.

3fourths (9347) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - OCT 16, 2013
Draft at GABF 2013. Multiple samples. Nose is strongly hoppy and moderately malty; lemon spice, balm, light pepper, flowers, etc., with a baked cracker and bread crust notes to the toasty Pilsner malt. Some tropical fruit and lemon garlic notes and a faint butter resemblance that gives it a buttered biscuit and tropical ester quality. Highly bitter, medium sweetness, washing of acid across the palate.

Clear yellow thin head. Light hop scent. Light bitter hop that fades to a nice light finish.

On draft at Tap 25. It pours a very clear yellow color with a white head. The aroma has tons of fresh pilsner malt with light florals and lemon. The flavor is hop spice and very bitter. More big pilsner malt and super hoppy. A little citrus and pine to go along with the earthy spice. Kind of tastes like a German American hybrid pils. Nice.

sloth (2906) - Ceciltucky, Co., Maryland, USA - SEP 28, 2013
Small, white head with good retention and solid lacing. Pale, gold color. Nose of grains, straw and grass.Med/light body, nice carbo level and crisp. Bready malt flavors, thankfully dry and brisk with a nicely bracing hoppyness. Nicely bitter and pungent. Dry, bready, grassy finish. A solid Pilz i,d say. Draft/growlered as East Village Pils. Procured at statelineliquors, Elkton MD.

troopie (2341) - Munchen an der Willamette, Oregon, USA - SEP 28, 2013
Draught. Grasst pilsner aroma. Rather like a good German, or Ostdeutscher pils well balanced. A Green Flash beer.

Pint at The Market on Washington. Labeled Green Flash Pilsner. I assumed this was going to be a strongly hoppy and dry pilsner. I was wrong. While not awful, this one doesn’t have a great hop potency like Sam Adams Nobel Pils, for instance. The aroma is mildly bitter with notes of corn and crackers. There is decent generic beer flavor with hints at cereal and corn. It’s not really bad. I wouldn’t call it great, either.
