Comes out of the tap a rich coffee brown with a fine-bubbled and rather persistent wheat head that leaves very generous lacing. Aroma is monumentally hoppy - it’s like sniffing a fresh bale of hay - with roast malt, caramel and coffee undertones. Woody hops dominate the hearty flavor, which is quite bitter but not fiercely so; notes of caramel, quality coffee, roast malt, even hints of molasses and licorice make themselves known. Each sip seems a little different. Robust texture is fairly thick, if not hugely fizzy. If you like stouts/porters AND IPAs, this is an absolute must! nathan30533 (1020) - Clifton, Ohio, USA - MAR 8, 2014
Great brew. Hoppy and black. This is just how I like my beer. Great tasting hops and wonderful overall brew. Erzengel (8769) - Wuppertal, GERMANY - MAR 16, 2014

Dark in the glass with a very nice beige head. The nose is floral and some kind of dark. The beer starts intense floral hopped, very nice with hints of pine and resin. In the mainpart there comes the roasted aroma, espresso, roasted bread. This mix of aroma is great. In the aftertaste there is a nice bitter note, which adds to the slightly sweet body a nice counterpart. The aftertaste is long - very floral with nice roasted aroma together with a nice moderate bitterness. And at 7.2% still highly drinkable.
A very great Black IPA! --> 14/13/14/15
22 oz. bottle from Total Wine, Virginia Beach, VA. Dark brown cola-like pour with a frothy khaki head. Clean grassy and piney hop aroma with faint notes of chocolate. Outstanding bitter hop flavor combined with a perfect amount of chocolate and coffee from the roasted malt. Wow, just about as perfect as a black IPA can be. Sampled from 650mL bottle. Poured into goblet. Two finger head, dark red / ebony color, moderately carbonated. Aroma of resin, pine, citrus, slightly floral. Great mouthfeel, moderate palate, complexity lingers after each sip. Very much a ’green flash’ beer. Reminds me of a slightly malty imperial IPA.

Pours a deep black with a large creamy tan head that left sticky lacing. Aroma of fresh citrusy and piney hops with the slightest hint of roast. Flavor of aggressive piney and grapefruit hops. The hop bitterness really is intense. The beer is nice and dry and the malt profile really takes a back seat to the hops. Like the aroma there is the slightest hint of roast but its really light. This is how I like my Black IPAs. Over the top hoppy and dry. Crash_the_dog (163) - Fairway, Kansas, USA - FEB 28, 2014
Absolutely gorgeous - looks like a freshly poured Coke. Nose had light citrus and a hoppiness that seems at odds with the appearance. Flavor much more in the IPA vein than the color would lead one to believe. Spectacular beer

22oz bomber pours with a nice dark body that supports a mocha colored head of foam. The aroma offers up modest yet playful juicy hops mixing with dark roasted malts and chocolate brownie. Yes! Smells great. The taste starts with dark roasted malts to some burnt malts that are blended with a modest yet nicely balanced array of citrus hops and spicy dank onion like hoppiness. This is all going so well together as some chocolate surfaces into the finish. This isn’t a huge rich Black IPA but it has plenty of flavor and hop to malty balance. Nice. joshmcg000 (388) - Iowa, USA - MAR 23, 2014
Pours black with white head. Aroma is chocolate dark malt with a bit of citrus and floral hops. First thing that stands out is the extremely smooth velvety texture, and it has a subtle roast dark chocolate taste, but also caramel. Mostly though its hops. Tropical fruit juice hop flavors with some piney bitterness. Pretty great stuff. jgb9348 (6281) - Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia, USA - MAR 28, 2014
Deep rich dark brown coloured body with a nice, three centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of strong, pungent hops, resin, pine and alcohol, all with bunches of roasted malt and some very nice tropical fruits, somehow! Medium-bodied; Assertive roasted malt at first that fades to a very nice hop flavour of tropical fruits and resin, all with a large hop bitterness at the end and a perfect balance of malt. Aftertaste shows a good balance but even better hoppy finish that has some sweetness as well. Overall, a great Black IPA that is the epitome of the style - hops everywhere, but a great balance of malt and a very strong complexity. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Arlington, Virginia (Clarendon) on 09-March-2014 for US$8.99 sampled at home in Washington on 28-March-2014.
