This appears to be the bigger, badder brother of Hop Head Red. And everything I ever wanted Hop Head Red to be - this is. Hoppy, fruity, an excellent blend of the hops/malts.
Listed as 8.5% on tap. Pours a ruby red-copper with head and lace. Significant carbonation and mouthfeel. Flavors and aroma of rye, hops, fresh baked bread, sour mash and spices. Overall rich, bold with some astringency. Sathorael (164) - Oceanside, California, USA - OCT 22, 2013
Deep amber pour with medium offwhite head and great legs. Aromas of caramel, toffee, floral and grassy hops. Taste is big doughy malts and pine resin with touches of caramel and toffe and a mild alcohol warming. Finish is dry with a lingering bitterness. Draft at Moriartys. Dark hazy ruby with a good off-white head that left lots of lace. Deep full red fruit. Currants. Pumpernickel. Tangelo pith. Rotted celery. Black pepper. Bing cherry pits. Watercress. Scorched dandelions. Big hoppy rye spice in the finish. NYCTrav (4) - - JUN 12, 2013 does not count
Had this on cask. It's a great red ale with a great malt profile and lingering finish. Definitely recommend this beer.

Tap at proof. Super dark red almost brown with large khaki foaming head. Not much of an aroma but some toast grain and floral hops. Malty sweetness with grass and floral bitterness. Full body and creamy mouth feel. Kroney (256) - San Diego, California, USA - MAY 19, 2013
pours clear dark mahogany with a thick tan head. aroma is mostly hop forward( citrus and pine) with some grassy notes as well. I’m not getting much of any malt in the nose. flavor is all green flash/ San Diego style hop bomb... pine, floral, citrus, grass - awesome. some warming from the alcohol, but not over powering.much better than their hop head red, which I absolutely love. great beer beerfest5 (1207) - Cloneen, IRELAND - MAR 4, 2012
This really shouldn’t be labeled as an american strong ale, there really needs to be a category for red ales, even if amber ale doesn’t quite fit the bill. Delicious hop bomb, but with the exact right amount of malt foundation. Wonderful. Lagunitasfan (1323) - San Diego, California, USA - MAR 23, 2011
On tap at Urge for the Total Tap Takeover with BP and GF. Copper pour with eggshell head. Sharp hoppiness and matching malty smooth goodness. Can definitely taste the hops and every bit of the alcohol. Nice strong beer. ben4321 (6827) - Hoboken, New Jersey, USA - JAN 2, 2011
Location: Draft at the RnH, 12/30/10
Aroma: The nose is resiny and grassy with some caramel, floral, and citrus notes
Appearance: This beer pours a nice copper color with a frothy white head
Flavor: The taste is rather resiny, decent sweetness, very nice hoppy presence
Palate: It has a sticky pine-like body, a nice mouthfeel and a long, dry finish
Overall this was a very nice example of the hoppy red style. Well-made and highly drinkable stuff. A bigger version of Hop Head Red? Seems like a good idea, and I enjoyed this one quite a bit
