Tap at Stone Sour Fest 2009. Pours dark brown, almost black. Aroma is earthy malts along with some alcohol. Surprisingly not sour in the nose or the flavor considering the barrel aging and brett. Flavor is rich and sharp, almost stout-like with espresso tones. Oak flavors are present too. The finish is a medicinal-like bitterness rather than sour. On cask at San Diego Real Ale Fest, Carlsbad (6/12/09): Mostly opaque dark mahogany pour has an airy, spotty-lacing off-white head. Aroma of sweet toasty dark caramel and vinous oaky woody complexity with a touch of black cherries. Starts with good earthy fullness and rich toasty caramel with some dark cherry fruitiness and vinous tart notes before an oaky finish. Well-balanced and complex. Cask at Pizza Port Real Ale fest 2009. Pours a lightly hazed ruby brown. Nose of red wine grapes, vinegar, oak and brett. Flavor was slightly tart with some funky vinegar and red wine. (Draught) Pours a deep amber body with a medium off-white head. Aroma of raisins, yeast, brown sugar, leather, and vinous. Flavor of vinous, raisins, brown sugar, caramel, light funkiness, some spices, and subtle oak.

Pours a fairly murky brown.
Nose is big on raisin, candi sugar, red wine, hints of funk.

On Tap at the Stone Sourfest, listed as Green Flash Grand Mantis-Merlot Barrel Aged Grand Cru, and I think it caught some people out into thinking it was the regular Mantis. Pours with a murky brown body and a small, off-white head. Taste of raisins and brown sugar, light wine, oak and brett. Tap at Blind Tiger. Good, although I didn’t enjoy it as much as I did the regular Grand Cru. This one definitely has a more funky, sour character. Pours dark brown with a thick, tan head. Some funk and Belgian yeast in the aroma, some band-aid. Flavor has a nice, tart and fruity character, but very rich and not light. Mild roast in the tail. Medium to big in body, a little boozy. Stone Sourfest 2010. Not much on the notes. Dark pour. Clear. Too sweet in the mouth. Candy. Nice spicy finish. Not sour.
