January 18th, 2012 - It must be hard to sell a winter warmer in San Diego, and it must be even harder to sell it by calling it "Winter Warmer." I can see confused San Diegans picking up a bottle and looking down at the label, then past the glass down at their feet adorned in sandals, and then back at the label. Still, if one drinks this as a dark brew and not as a treatment to ward off cold and bitter snow, it’s a unique, eccentric brew worth tasting. The smell features raisins and touches of candied pecans and light brown sugar. The flavor is spicier; sharp and packed with roasted pecans and walnuts, this brew’s flavor is so nutty it is almost bitter, like the aftertaste of an undercooked almond. Is it a winter warmer? I don’t feel any warmer, and I don’t think I’d be quivering with beer lust to have this on a snowy day, but the flavor profile is unique, and worth it for the inveterate beer drinker who looks for new and interesting beer profiles. Tap @ brewery. Dark but clear amber pour with a frothy off-white head. Aroma is light pine, char, caramel, roasted malt, and subtle spice on the finish. Taste is a heavy roasted malt/char character with some pine, hop bitterness, and a sweet, nearly medicinal caramel taste. Noticeable hop bitterness on the finish. Nice, unique beer. tokyogoat (1503) - San Diego, California, USA - FEB 7, 2012
i was warned by the bartender that most people were not liking this beer. i figured i’d give it a shot anyway. pour was fairly dark and on par with what i’d expect from a winter warmer. taste was nothing like i was expecting, not a witner warmer like i had thought, a dark fruit and caramel infused bitter bomb. mild herbal and floral notes with an aggressive bitter finish. kind of beer you have to taste over and over to really get whats going on. a cool and unique beer. Draft at the brewery. Red/brown pour, with a light tan head. Carel malt, light spice, pine needles, herbal hops, bread, and moderately bitter. Ok

On tap @ Toronado SD: Poured a dark brown liquid into a snifter glass with almost no formation of head. Aroma is to faint and weak to pick up on other than a touch of dark fruit. The flavor is semi sweet with a taste of dark roast malts that also boast a taste of fig, raisin, and an unripe plum. A really different beer recipe that has me confused as to what style of beer this actually is. Finish is a somewhat astringent though with an aftertaste of sweat or metal. On tap. Pours with a hazy brownish body with a lasting and thick tan head. Aromas are of cola, hoppy, brown sugar, malty, pine, and bready. Light spice. Flavors are a bit too sweet for my taste, malt forward, brown sugar, cardamom and lightly herbal/grassy. Medium to slightly sticky body, moderate carbonation. nickd717 (4842) - San Francisco, California, USA - DEC 26, 2011
