From a12 oz bottle shared at home. Pours a cola brown with a beige head. Strong pine aroma. Flavors of spruce with bitterness mellowed by some sweet malt. jtw (1163) - farmington, Michigan, USA - MAY 11, 2013
12 oz bottle, pours a roasty stouty black with chocolate and hops aroma - an interesting opening approach. a tiny bit of alcohol is apparent but not boozy, and the big hops presence is a fun combination with the cocoa. full bodied with a fully bitter and dark chocolate finish - quite a nice beer. msh4k3 (8) - USA - MAY 8, 2013 does not count
12oz bottle served in fluted pint glass.
no date on bottle
Poured 2 finger mocha head. Dark as night mild carbonation.
You get a hint of lemony hops then a bit of malts and grass scent.
First sip a bit of front bitterness that gets straightened out by dark malts complex bitterness from chocolate. Not very sappy but a nice little warming backend from a 7.2% beer.
I mean wow the palate on this is nice a little carbonation and really creamy.
Wow first black IPA pretty good, not what I expected very balance and really nothing to compare to. Its like if a bitter old school west coast IPA and Nice Russian Imperial Stout had a love child. Would drink again! crossovert (12934) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - MAY 6, 2013
Dark and thick-looking black pour with a billowing tan head. The smell is intruiging, it is liek a chocolate cherry pie, there are also elements of roast, pine, and citrus. Not hoppy in the smell but wow what a nice malt scent. The flavor brings the hops. The nice thing is they arent overly furity or citrusy they provide backing support but don’t clash with the malt. It leaves the beer a dry, bitter, cocoaey type ipa. Not super sweet, very nice. njager246 (697) - grand rapids, Michigan, USA - APR 28, 2013

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 3/4/2013. Pours pitch black color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Spotty foamy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of huge mango, passionfruit, tangerine, caramel, toast, floral, light roast, and floral earthiness. Nice and interesting aromas with huge tropical hop presence and minimal malts. Taste of mango, passionfruit, tangerine, orange zest, roasted malt, light char, toast, coffee, floral, and roasted earthiness. Fair amount of floral bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus, tropical, roasted malt, light char, toast, and floral on the finish for a bit. Good complexity of roasted malt and hop flavors; with a good malt/hop balance and no cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a fairly creamy and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a good black IPA. Good balance of malt and hop flavors; and smooth to sip on. An enjoyable offering. DrSilverworm (9671) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - APR 12, 2013
12oz bottle, shared with DanielCoor. Dark brown, slightly red color. More clear around the edges, but from a reasonable distance, more than dark enough for a black IPA. Medium body. More dry texture. Good, super-smooth lighter carbonation. Nice piney, lightly earthy, light herbal hop aroma. Good, light roasted malt aroma, a nice balanced amount. Lightly toasty, just a hint of burnt / ashiness. Good herbal bitterness, light sweet taste in the finish. Very tasty aftertaste. Super good, drinkable, and tasty. Was not expecting that, as I was told that this was less than fresh. Very fresh, assertive, citrusy piney nose. Much better than expected, very solid kaser (6312) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - APR 11, 2013
Draft at Sheffield. Pours black with creamy tan head. Aroma of hops and cocoa. Thick and rich. Good half IPA half porter combo - very well done. Mittenator (1612) - Michigan, USA - APR 4, 2013
Bottle. Near black pour with a beige head. Strong hop aroma, sugar, coffee and chocolate. Much more malt and coffee in the flavor. The hops are totally overpowered. TheBear11D (365) - Michigan, USA - APR 3, 2013
Anger pours a dark chocolate color with a thick dark brown head that leaves lacing everywhere. The aroma is sharp floral hops. Floral hops are the backbone of this beer. Overall this is an enjoyable brew. I would recommend you have one if you enjoy IPAs.
