Bottle thanks to mikem409, pours black wit ha thick light brown head and lacing all through the glass, aroma is of bright juicy hops with a balance of light malt and chocolate roast, the flavor has a roasty front end with a finish of citrus and fruit, chocolate as well, really balanced through out, nice stuff.

Bottle from my good friend in Grand Rapids. Pours nearly black with a mountainous foamy head that leaves behind sea foam type lacing. Aroma is pleasant with roast, coffee and heavy citrus hops. The sweetness of the malt and bitterness of the hops mellow each other out, but the flavor combination is slightly odd IMHO. The beer has a nice creamy mouthfeel and the body is medium to medium-full. Cool beer; worth trying.

UPDATED: MAR 7, 2015 Tap: Black, traced with a wood-stained shade of dark brown around the edge, capped with a coffee-cream colored head that mellows out slowly, leaving behind some spotty lacing. Aroma is heavy chocolate malt, dry cocoa powder, crushed coffee beans, burnt caramel, roast, & a back-end of mostly hoppage; leaves, mild pine, citrus peel. The taste really amplifies the citric presence of the hops... peppery white grapefruit & tangerine flesh, actually almost tart for a split second before the herbal & more ashy notes come in with the heavy bitterness. Malty finish & aftertaste with roasted coffee beans, cocoa dust, burnt malt, & charred wood, all meshed with the decrescendo of citric & pine-forward hops. Not bad, but something wasn’t meshing perfectly between the malt & hops, for some reason. Definitely a nice brew, but nothing to go crazy over.

Bottle. Pours a dark black color with a large loose wispy java head. Nose is deep citrus with notes of resin and pine. Taste is hoppy and bitter and well balanced with deep chocolate malts. Finish is bitter, dry, with moderate lingering. A very tasteful and flavorful BIPA. Quaff Score 8 / 10

Pours black with a brown head and hops, citrus, and roasted malt. Taste is of hops, citrus, and grapefruit that is underlined by roasted malt and chocolate that come through into the bitter, roasty finish. Delicious black IPA

Pour is dark brown, fairly right tan colored head. Nose has a decent amount of roast and some black licorice notes. Light char and a bit of citrus orange. Taste is even more char, heavy and dark roast, black malts, citrus and hops behind, lingering bitterness with strong lingering char. Strong carbonation on a light body, a bit slick on the back of the throat.

Based on taste, I’d probably call this a super hopped up amber but it’s black. Gracious me! There is also a good long lasting head and thick web of lacing--pretty nice looking beer. The focus here is very strongly on American hops. I am not picking out a ton nuance, just a general citrus, pine, tomato leaf sort of hoppiness. It’s good. Something about the tastes brings out the fruitiness as well. There is just a very slight touch of malt toasted malt character which is why I say it tastes like an amber. Overall, it is quite dry and drinkable despite it’s relatively high alcohol and hopping rate so I gotta say I like it.

A very dark beer reminds me of a cup of black coffee. pours a huge brown head that sticks well and leaves nice lacing. You get strong aromas of coffee, spice, chocolate and some hops. on the palate you get that bitter coffee taste with a little sweet dark chocolate along with some malt and hop notes. Overall I enjoyed it very much and I will buy it again. great beer for under $10 a six pack. A definite must try for fans of this type of brew.
