Nice malty body with spices and some banana bread taste, not overly sweet with a mild bitterness and booze warming. Good stuff. jaymobrown (1845) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - MAY 31, 2016
Had this on draft. I was really surprised at this one. I saw the name and was expecting something really sweet, and perhaps not very good. I was wrong. It had a nice warm alcohol nose with malt and bread notes that translated well into the warming drinking. It was sweet, but not overly so and the alcohol balanced it out nicely. This was my first GB beer, so I may be slightly skewed in my rating of it, but I would rank this Porter as one of my top 3. I hope they bring it back this fall. njager246 (697) - grand rapids, Michigan, USA - APR 5, 2015
Draft, aroma is slightly sweet with malts, taste of spices, bread, and banana, pretty good KPD (58) - Michigan, USA - JUN 24, 2014
UPDATED: JUN 25, 2014 On draft at Ashley’s and called a brown ale, not a porter., Pours cloudy dark brownish red. Smallish head. Aroma is banana, malt with alcohol. Big beer with big mouthfeel. Flavor is malty sweetness, dark fruit, a touch of banana way less than aroma and alcohol. Big strong complex high alcohol beer.

UPDATED: SEP 2, 2014 Tap: I thought I was handed the wrong beer, as this was labeled "porter", & the beer I received looked like poopy brown, swampy toilet water. Dafuq? Greasy mud, capped with a khaki-colored layer of fine foam. Aroma has notes of... Hefeweizen yeast? Either that or some strain of Belgian yeast... Confusing notes of bubblegum, spice, clove, mashed bananas. So I guess Greenbush considers the banana-like taste of the yeast is enough to deem this a "banana porter". By that metric, Weihenstephaner makes the best banana beers in the world. Taste is somewhere between a double-hefe & a Belgian strong pale ale. Rotten & sweet banana flavors, bubblegum, spicy clove, a little mint... Perhaps some cinnamon? Big dryness on the back-end with lighter tones of nuts & a mild, woody & musty funk. This is not at all a "banana porter" & Greenbush should be embarrassed for labeling it as such. However, it’s not by any means a bad beer. It’s actually alright. Just severely mislabeled. Good thing I’m not rating based on the porter style guidelines. Tmoney99 (14365) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - AUG 3, 2013
Draft sample. Poured a cloudy brown color with an average frothy light brown head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate toasted malt and banana bread aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy toasted banana bread sweet flavor with a medium sweet finish of moderate to long duration. Solid complex brew.

Sampler on tap at the brewpub (Sawyer, MI). Pours a murky brownish hue, sewage appearance with some mellow glow on the edges and bottom, amber or lighter. A rich frothy head atop is offwhite, sticks around as a small filmy layer. Laces small. Aromas show gentle banana, bit of ester, mellow brown malt. Wheat elements, touch of spiciness, yeast. Kiss of cocoa, bready and a bit of toast. Some earth, more gentle banana and a touch of cakey sweetness. Initial is more banana, estery, firm Dunkelweiss feel. Richer banana and fruity ester up front sustain, keep pushing as some bready and gentle toasty malt elements give some play. Firm banana keeps pushing throughout. A gentle clove element, perhaps not enough. A gentle toastiness, brown and gentle carmelized malts. This seems like an estery run-away train. Not much presence beyond that except a touch of heat, some toastiness, and bread. A bit of heat, some more bread, dough, darker toasty and faint cocoa slant. Still, the estery banana seems to definitely hump this into submission. Ok beer, ugly pour, a bit of a one trick pony. The nose isn’t even strong. Meh.
