dark ale
A blend of two ales: Old 5X , which is brewed to the maximum strength possible (around 12% abv) and left to mature in 100-barrel oak vats for a minimum of two years, and BPA, a dark, full-bodied freshly brewed beer which is added just before bottling. The result is a unique beer - strong (6% abv), dark, fruity, oaky and very, very special.
Bottles have been sterile filtered since May 2006.

This is blended Beer,an Old Ale.Plenty of Xmas cake, rum barrel, leather and old furniture in an old room character.Reminds me of a musty cigar lit sitting in an old leather chair then someone pours raisin juice over you,but not Gouden Carolus Xmas raisins, different raisins.Yes the expected Caramel,Chocolate/Coffee flavours are here, levened by some citrus in the hops, with slight flashes of Butterscotch,Clove,Vanilla and Licorice. It has the smoothness, low carbonation and alcohol kick one expects from an Old Ale.

Color castao oscuro perfectamente transparente.

Clear deep red coloured beer with a small, shortlasing, brownish head. Aroma is malty, dark malt, milk chocolate, toffee sweet caramel, oak, vanilla, bit of port wine, dark fruits. Taste is fruity with in the beginning, rising nuttiness, strong dry nutty finish. Lasting nuttiness and a bit alcohol. Overall not too sweet. Medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Good!

Enjoyed: Poured from a bottle into English pint glass. Appearance: Deep red/brown colour, with small head. Aroma: Dry plums and raisin, caramel, toffee, alcohol/whiskey/oak Palate: Medium body, gentle carbonation. Taste: Sweet, dark fruits, caramel, roasted malt, alcohol, gentle bitter and dry aftertaste with alcohol note. Overall impression: Complex, unusual, different, good but not for everyday it is not my favourite style. But, after some time/sips, it is very enjoyable - it goes excellent with homemade smoked cheese from Lika.

Bottle. Pours a deep brown colour with a thin beige head. Aroma of toffee, burnt caramel, some treacle, slight dark fruits, a little prune, a hint of brown sugar and subtle spice. Taste of caramel, treacle, dark fruits, some brown sugar, slight chocolate, a hint of metal and subtle spice. Medium bodied and moderate carbonation. A short, spicy, malty bitterness in the finish. Started strong with a nice aroma of rich toffee, treacle and honey fruits but the taste is a standard fruity, malty old ale. Short finish too but a very good Greene King beer overall.

Bottle, 330 ml, as Strong Suffolk Dark Ale. Pours clear dark copper/brown with initially a finger or so of soapy light tan head which dissipates quickly. Tiny amount of lacing and visible carb. Aroma is strong dark caramel/toffee malts up front with quite a big whiff of vanilla and allspice, with some minor hints of dark fruits, cake, wholemeal bread and cocoa off to the side somewhere. Little bit of a sharp and metallic edge to the whole aroma and something reminiscent of swimming pool chlorine at times, but neither of these are strong enough to completely spoil it. Taste is a lighter caramel malt with wholemeal bread, honey, light spice, dark fruits, bit of pithy citrus towards the finish, in which is more bread and a light malty bitterness. Little bit sickly and medicinal in the middle when the fruits come in. Body is medium, texture is smooth but a bit watery, carbonation is nonexistent and the finish is dry, sticky and astringent. Definitely flawed but amazing by Greene King standards!
