dark ale
A blend of two ales: Old 5X , which is brewed to the maximum strength possible (around 12% abv) and left to mature in 100-barrel oak vats for a minimum of two years, and BPA, a dark, full-bodied freshly brewed beer which is added just before bottling. The result is a unique beer - strong (6% abv), dark, fruity, oaky and very, very special.
Bottles have been sterile filtered since May 2006.

Cybion (188) - Kent, ENGLAND - JAN 9, 2017
Bottle, 330 ml, as Strong Suffolk Dark Ale. Pours clear dark copper/brown with initially a finger or so of soapy light tan head which dissipates quickly. Tiny amount of lacing and visible carb. Aroma is strong dark caramel/toffee malts up front with quite a big whiff of vanilla and allspice, with some minor hints of dark fruits, cake, wholemeal bread and cocoa off to the side somewhere. Little bit of a sharp and metallic edge to the whole aroma and something reminiscent of swimming pool chlorine at times, but neither of these are strong enough to completely spoil it. Taste is a lighter caramel malt with wholemeal bread, honey, light spice, dark fruits, bit of pithy citrus towards the finish, in which is more bread and a light malty bitterness. Little bit sickly and medicinal in the middle when the fruits come in. Body is medium, texture is smooth but a bit watery, carbonation is nonexistent and the finish is dry, sticky and astringent. Definitely flawed but amazing by Greene King standards!

Bottle. Dark mahogany colour. Intensely flavoured strong ale. Roast/burnt malty (caramel, burnt toffee, oaky). Sour fruity (dark fruits, raisins, berries). Spicy. Fairly bitter throughout. Slightly metallic edge. Long very dry bitter roasty finish. Lovely Beer! (2014-07-24)

Bottiglia.

Flasche (“Strong Suffolk Dark Ale“, 33 cl) von April Gourmet, Peking. - Tiefes Kupferrotbraun, klar. Unangenehmer, leicht metallischer Nachgeschmack. - Vor allem im Abgang etwas abgestanden, also „alt“ (wie man es von einem Old Ale erwartet), dazu aber geschmacklich dünn und etwas holprig. Nicht so recht überzeugend.
