dark ale
A blend of two ales: Old 5X , which is brewed to the maximum strength possible (around 12% abv) and left to mature in 100-barrel oak vats for a minimum of two years, and BPA, a dark, full-bodied freshly brewed beer which is added just before bottling. The result is a unique beer - strong (6% abv), dark, fruity, oaky and very, very special.
Bottles have been sterile filtered since May 2006.

Marko (6285) - Split / Zagreb, CROATIA - APR 16, 2017
Bottled at the Croatian beer judge classes some time ago, blind tasting. My notes were subsequently lost, but I do remember this as a quality, tasty complex aroma- and flavor-wise malt-driven beer, blending various malt-produced notes with some fruitiness that may well be from the yeast, but without aggression, without, perhaps, that much "daring" (which is still plenty considering the brewer), very well polished all in all. Will rerate almost certainly if faced with another bottle. In any case, I liked this.

Aromas leves a madera y a frutas maduras. Buen aspecto, espuma fina y persistente. Cuerpo medio-bajo. En boca balanceada, maltosa, fruta madura y ahumado de la madera. Final seco

Piwo metne w kolorze brazowym nalewa sie z obfita iloscia piany ktora znikajac pozostawia lacing naszkle. W aromacie niezbyt intensywne orzechy, toffee i zwietrzala kawa.

Bottle from estucerveza as green king strong suffolk dark ale. Hazy orange red brown black. Thin beige head. Medium sweetness. Medium thin body. Finish is dry. Aroma and flavour is caramel, chili, vanilla, oak, vegetable.

FinnIckler (978) - Edinburgh, SCOTLAND - MAR 30, 2017
Bottle from galleria Kaufhof in Munich. Pours dark brown. Nose is chocolate, nuts, citrus, bread, orangepeel, red graped resins. Palate is very smooth, chocolate, dried fruit, wood, red grapes, bitter backbone. very complex for 6 %, still very Drinkable. Great beer, great old ale, the only thing I don’t really like is the bitterness in the finish that lingers in your mouth for a bit.

Trolleo (1833) - Pula / Zagreb, CROATIA - MAR 30, 2017
Little bit of wood, alcohol, hints of dried fruit, brown sugar, resins and honey. Clear coppery to ruby body with small creamy and very persistent brown head. Taste is rusty keys at first, than chocolate and sweet caramel, some honey and toffee. Medium body, average carbonation, sparkly. Great aroma, taste has some flaws.

mulander (253) - POLAND - MAR 21, 2017
Pours dark brown with red reflexes accompanied by a medium quite long lasting tan head. The aroma is a huge disappointment, it’s very weak almost non existent takes a huge amount of stirring to pick up any notes - mostly cherries. Lightly sweet in taste, the alcohol is somewhat coming threw with , almost no bitterness with a cognac note. Medium bodied, oily and foamy texture soft carbonation. It’s good overall but lacks character and feels very bland/average.

Bottle from BevMo! in Menlo Park, CA. Aroma is caramel, rich fruits. Taste is smooth caramel and deep, dark fruits of all kinds. Really incredible beer. A go-to Old Ale.

Evilman (265) - Taverny, FRANCE - MAR 11, 2017
Damn, what a lovely one! Exactly my kind of beer. Mine was the "Dark Ale" variant, which is apparently the same beer borrowing another name and a different design. Despite its "strong" label, this is a very sweet beer with a low alcohol level. Taste and aroma, however, are among the most pleasant beers I experienced. Smoky, caramelized, very small hints of fruits in the aftertaste... This is what I’m looking for all day. Reminds me a lot of two other favorites - Schloss Eggenberg’s Urbock and Samichlaus. Just lower alcohol level, which is my only complaint. Wonderful beside that, and totally APPROVED BY TAVERNY’S BLACK METAL CREW!

kasap (27) - Skopje, MACEDONIA - MAR 10, 2017
Bottle. Pours dark red with a thin, short lasting off-white head with minimal lacing. Sugary/sweet toffee aroma, with hints of dark fruits, molasses and some rum-like alcohol. Similar mouth-feel. dominant sweet toffees, transforming into warming alcohol with sweet finish. Medium bodied, sticky texture and average carbonation. Pretty good, though not every day beer.
