dark ale
A blend of two ales: Old 5X , which is brewed to the maximum strength possible (around 12% abv) and left to mature in 100-barrel oak vats for a minimum of two years, and BPA, a dark, full-bodied freshly brewed beer which is added just before bottling. The result is a unique beer - strong (6% abv), dark, fruity, oaky and very, very special.
Bottles have been sterile filtered since May 2006.

Let it warm up. What might have once been acrid roast has faded into a delicate roast surrounding rich toffee. A beautifully rounded strong ale. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

In spite of the dull appearance and mon existing head, this is a masterbrew in this segment of beer. This is just about one of the best old ales out there. Good balance and spice, makes this my goto winter pint.

Grumpelmies (366) - GERMANY - NOV 12, 2017
UPDATED: NOV 12, 2017 Bottle. Dark ruby with a small, short-lived head. Aroma of malts and red fruits. Reminds me a little bit of Port and Sherry. Taste is malts, caramel, red fruits (cherries, cassis) and some wood. Sourish fruity. Medium carbonation. It's alright but for whatever reason I had higher expectations.

Bottle. Dark brown color. Toffee in the malty, vinous aroma. Full bodied. Malt, toffee and hints of oak and wine in the flavor. Maybe a bit sticky, but well balanced. Would love to try the stock ale straight from cask.

500 ml bottle. Pours clear dark brown reddish, big foamy head. Roasted malt, caramel, maple syrup, citrus, cassis. Well balanced taste. Medium bitterness, slightly sweet and sour. Creamy texture, low carbonated, full bodied. It ends fresh and crisp. Good!

May be an old bottle but this was a challenging one to get down. A bit of cardboard and just disjointed.

Light brown color with small beige head. Malty aroma with some ultra light dried fruits taste. Not amazed.

0.33l bottle. Clear brown/reddish color with small beige head. Aroma of malt and caramel. Taste is sweet and little bitter. Pretty boring and plain.

Sample at SBWF 2017. Dark amber with a small head. Quite soft with malt, caramel and some fruit. The body was medium as was the bitterness.
