Ochre coloured top fermented Abbey Beer with an abv of 6.7%. The use of Gatinais barley combined with carefully selected hops creates a perfectly balanced, relatively light tasting beer with a fruity malty taste.

UPDATED: SEP 27, 2012 500mL can from a grocery store in Aubigny-en-Artois. Shared this one figuratively with my Great Grandfather who’s grave I was visiting for the first time (died at Arras in 1917). Not-so-blonde, brownish with a lot of head, aroma has some really solid malts with some spice and yeast accenting it. Flavour is very pleasing, perfectly in balance and the depth of the malt complexity is quite impressive. Dark fruits, chocolate, apples, caramel, pear, yeast. A certain je-ne-sais-quoi about it, like how I can’t quite describe that malt richness of Dopplebocks, this is similar in principle. It was nice to have a surprisingly awesome beer during such a meaningful and significant experience. Here’s one for Sgt. John MacLeod!

11.2oz brown bottle from Tiger Town in Gardiner. Pours a beautiful golden yellow translucent body with a good half inch of off-white head. Smells really fruity and pleasant, like a fresh peach or apricot. Tastes very fruity also, with apricot and apple playing huge roles with some malt notes toward the finish. Just the slightest hint of alcohol in the flavor and mouthfeel. Fairly light on the mouthfeel, but makes this surprisingly drinkable for the abv. Really very delicious, one of the best examples of the style I’ve had. Really hitting the spot tonight.

UPDATED: NOV 11, 2011 Re-rating, on bottle in Paris. Great beer, malty and tasty. Aromas of caramel and grain. Taste is sweet, with bitter notes, and long length. Palate is velvety, and medium bodied. Dark yellow, with a frothy head. Tap. Tasty and easy-drinking. Aroma has fruits (apple), grain, and caramel. Flavour is long-lasting, it starts sweet, with bitterness at the end. Silky in the palate, medium body. Dark yellow and clean in the glass, with a thin and frothy head.

Aroma: Bready malts with hints of doughy yeast. Alcohol readily apparent, too. Hints of fruit--banana, maybe? Raisin? Appearance: Slightly hazy gold with a rich, white head. Taste: Medium-heavy sweetness with a hint of sour underneath. Palate: Medium body, oily texture, lively carbonation, long finish. Overall: Much too sweet for me, but it’s a really well developed and beautifully crafted beer.

Transfer from BA review on 5-4-13- Poured from bottle into a snifter Appearance- The beer pours a light to medium golden color with a rather large billowy white head. The head fades relatively quickly leaving a medium level of lace on the sides of the glass. Smell- The aroma of the brew is sweet of a citrus and light fruit aroma of apple and pear. There exists with these smells some nice noted of a banana as well as a moderately strong yeasty smell. Hints of a lightly boozed and vanilla aroma also are there, creating a rather pleasant nose overall. Taste – The taste begins malty and sweet with a strong presence of orange citrus upfront. As the flavors advance some yeasty and more banana flavors come to the tongue and are quickly joined by some lighter spice flavors of coriander and clove. Toward the end the of the taste the sweeter fruit flavors dwindle and an alcohol flavor mixed with some notes of vanilla hit the tongue producing, for an only 6.7 % abv brew,. a surprisingly boozy triple like flavor is left to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel-The body of the beer is on the thinner side with a carbonation level that is on the average side. The slightly thinner feel is actually rather nice of the sweet citrus and boozy flavors for the brew ,minimizing the former and complementing the later quite well. Overall – This is a Belgian style blond I rather like. It finishes on the drier side with more triple like characteristics all while maintaining a relatively smooth but warming flavor throughout the taste. Quite tasty.
