3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Aroma:: citrus Appearance: dark yellow, hazy, frothy
Taste: bitter, medium sourness, light sweetness,
Palate: astringent, long finish
fine, but nothing exciting
A fairly typical Belgian beer with the familiar banana ester yeasty aroma and sweet malty taste. Perfectly acceptable but nothing that raises it above the crowd

33cl bottle at home (5 V 2017). Another classic or classic-to-be amongst the Belgian strong blonde repertoire, very easily available and widely exported too - in France for instance, it is a common foreigner, next to the other abbey beers of the Grimbergen series. This heavy blonde is somewhat classic for sure, but not that old yet - not to be mistaken for the more prototypical Grimbergen Tripel. Now, this "golden edition" is the stronger version of the modal Blonde (of 6.7% ABV, since 1993) with refermentation and a 16° plato (of 8.0% ABV, only launched in the Spring of 2008). It is often compared with the Duvel branch, with a proportionate body, although it has a rather different mouthfeel. Let’s have a closer look. The collar is fat and thick: huge, white coloured, two thumbs high, very frothy to almost a snow blanket. The truly long lasting head tops a firm torso. This body is only a that hazy, but above all clear and vivid looking. There is a lot of carbonation already present at first sight. The hue is dark blonde, even amber and orange. Now this is a great, qualified-for-a-prom-date-appearance. Almost perfect looking, with an interesting, "Belgian" nose. The flavours combine lingering sour notes with fruity aromas - surely endowed by the yeasts. It becomes a that peachy. The spine is built from malts aptitude. Alas, these resemble pale malts, making the brew’s nose quite dull. The hops are very present as well, complementing the fruity character and adding some herby feeling to the scent. The first sips shows up as a warming, alcohol-infused, overly sweet pale ale. The carbonation amounts a medium to heavy level, the finish is quite long lasting with a keen spiritful feature - the hops make the throat leave quite dry and even dim. The whole has vast sugared, almost cake hints. Some side features contain soury dashes, which are welcoming. The taste is a bit of a blister, I’m afraid. The body somehow relies on unnatural palate enforcers. The range of the flavours is not that complex and diverse, depending on fairly shallow taste features. The strong and warming strong blonde experience is nothing wrong. But this traditional Grimbergen lacks some qualitative and intricating foundations to become an icon abbey brew.

Looks light golden and hazy. Spicy and sourish aroma. Belgian spiciness continues in taste adding fruits, honey and a bit of lemon. Definitely hops present and even mild bitterness detectable. Mainly sourish honey and spices. Alcohol well covered, no hint of 8% anywhere. Refreshingly strong blonde beer seems accurate. sdmmb (1826) - BELGIUM - JAN 23, 2016
