UPDATED: SEP 12, 2014 ’Luxury’ edition of Grimbergen Dubbel, limited, sold through the Delhaize supermarket chain in 2010 and intended to accompany meat dishes. Apparently brewed at De Smedt so a different thing from Grimbergen Dubbel altogether. Creamy, coarse, light beige head, dark brown colour with ruby hue, clear with little sparkling. Weakish aroma of toasted bread, bitter chocolate, iron, pear, raisins, liquorice, butter, coffee liqueur and my old friend DMS (cooked vegetables). Soft sweetish taste, bit candi, fruity notes, medium carbonation, smooth caramel middle, bit chocolatey, finish of grassy hops and warming alcohol, bit thin, some coffee grounds bitterness. Bit more delicate than the regular but still not nearly exciting enough for its price and ’pretention’ - which stopped me from also buying the blonde version. Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this bottle. Brown pour with a tan head. The aroma is full of sweet dark fruit with some toffee, raisins and bread. The flavor is also very fruity. Bottle at the ChrisO Snow Tasting, London - one of my contributions!!! Pours clearish, brown-red with a fine, creamy tan cap. Sugary brown bread in the nose. Big sweet flavor, simple, with semi-dark malts, brown sugar, toffee. Medium to full bodied with average carbonation. Lightly warming finish with more sugary brown bread. Simple stuff on the whole. Old, aged, papery aroma. Flat. Papery palate and taste. Dull. No hint of 7%, but still not a very good beer. Sticky and mashy and malty.
