As our friend Yvan De Baets writes, farmhouse ales were “either sour or very bitter.” This is the latter — a bitterly refreshing, eurocentric farmhouse ale produced by step mashing a 100% pilsner grist and hopping heavily with Hallertau Hersbrucker and Tettnang.

Bright golden orange pour with two fingers of sticky white head. Nose/flavor is 100% 3711 French saison yeast. Bread dough/cracked pepper/pear flesh. A touch sharp and bitter bite on the finish.

ClarkVV (7120) - Boston, Massachusetts, USA - JAN 24, 2018
Draught at Lulu's, 9/2/17.
Lightly-to-moderately hazy, blonde-maize with a firm, off-white head atop.
Bready malts and lots of strong yeast character combine to be rather forceful. Lots of clove, nectarine, white pepper and a big helping of grassy and peppery hops on the end. Just way too much going on here. Maybe the yeast is interesting and maybe the hops are too, but together it's just messy and crude (both seem like even separately, they'd be pushing it). No flaw or alcohol, but just no balance, depth or finesse whatsoever.
Similarly, the flavors are jumbled and forceful with too much green, grassy, astringent hop bitterness and, though the malts are well-presented flavor-wise, are a bit underattenuated, while a brisk carbonation exacerbates the bitterness. Clove, white pepper and too much hop character lie on the finish with growing sweetness further contributing to this very Americanized beer which is a saison in name only.

Alpha10 (901) - Ontario, CANADA - NOV 28, 2017
2017/11/28 - Pours a hazy straw colour with a soapy, white head that slowly reduces and leaves moderate lacing. Aroma is yeast, banana, bread, herbal notes, citrus (lemon, orange), pepper, spices, hay and light funk. Taste is lemon and orange citrus, hint of funk, yeast, banana, pepper/spices and herbal notes. Mouthfeel is medium with sharp carbonation and a drying, peppery, herbal finish. Good stuff. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

(Rating #7926)

Hazy straw/gold color; Medium slightly creamy body; Aroma of yeast, floral hops, hay, & some spice; Flavor of malt, yeast, herbal hops, citrus, and pepper/spice; Finish is dry and fairly bitter; Standard carbonation; Pretty decent.

My Bottom Line:
Herbal hops grow proud through banana undertones and citrus accents in this rather crisp quencher.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam covers the misty golden.
-Mouthfeel is slender and prickly.
-Drinkability is high.
-Cereals contribute a touch of bread.

On tap at Draught. Pours a gently hazed gold with a medium sized white head. Musk and hay on the nose. Yeast, gentle sweetness. Medium bodied, soft musk and a touch of tropical fruit. Long yeast tone, a bit of banana. Long slow bitterness.

shawnmurphy (738) - Plattsburgh, New York, USA - AUG 23, 2017
22-ounce bottle pours hazy yellow with thick white whipped-cream head and lacing; lots of visible carbonation in glass. Aroma: lemon, hay, barnyard, honey. Flavor: all the above, ramped up with some black and white pepper and some prickly finishing hopiness; lots of sweet-sour barnyard funkiness going on. Mouthfeel: medium-bodied with a softness on the palette; drinks fuller than its ABV.
