VSA is an Extra Special golden ale that’s light in color but full-bodied, with a snappy hop finish. A bit of extra time in the conditioning tank rounds out and mellows the ale.

12 oz. version, which is filtered, is brewed at Shipyard Brewing in Portland; 22 oz. version, which is not filtered and only sold locally, is brewed at Gritty McDuff’s in Freeport

Draft at the brewpub in Freeport. Clear amber. Wheat aroma with light citrus. The taste adds floral hops and lemon with resin. The mouthfeel is clean with a bit of syrup too. Not bad. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Purchased in their mixed pack on my trip to Maine. Pours a clean golden-amber colour with big bubble carbonation. Frothy white head with good lacing. Big grain nose with honey hints. The grain is there in the taste, but with some decent hops balancing things. A nice cereal malt summer ale.

Reviewed from notes. The appearance had a clear amber/blonde body with some slowly rising carbonation filling an exceptionally foamy, lumy white head with light spotty lacing. The head lasted for about three minutes, light rings were left in the wake as the beer went down The smell had some breadiness, lemon and malts. The taste was bitter through previously mentioned flavors. On the palate, it sat at/about a light, sessionable, crisp, dry aftertaste and finish. Overall, I’ve had this a numerous amount of times on tap and out of a bottle. This is good for the style and for me.

Dark golden colored ale. Minimal head. Nice hops aftertaste. Medium body. Pours somewhat thick. Very nice overall.

Keg at the Portland branch. Pours clear gold with a light, white foam head. Mild grainy pale malt nose, straw. Medium sweet flavor, sugary pale malts, grains, hay, citrus peel. Light to medium bodied with fine carbonation. Sweet finish, white bread, some cereal grains, a bit of ripening lemon, straw. So so.

Bottle from Capone’s. Pours chill hazy dark straw with 1-finger off-white head. Nose is bready pal malt, hopcitrus, and diacetyl. Tastes of bready pale malt, mild hopcittrus, and diacetyl. Not good.

Clear copper with a three finger white head that slowly drops to one finger. Good looking. Taste is semi-sweet malt with bitter citrus joining as it moves through the palate. Both linger for a short finish. Light, better served around 50 degrees, summer quencher.

tap at brewpub. clear pale yellow with a small and quickly diminishing white cap. sweet malts, bland herbs with a citrus wedge (literally, darn). moderate carbonation, light body, bland herbal finish.
