Dark reddish and cloudy with not much head going on. Syrupy carmel and slightly fruity. Boozy. Not a huge fan. Had this as part of a flight at Grumpy Troll in Mount Horeb, WI. nuplastikk (6416) - Madison, Wisconsin, USA - DEC 28, 2009
Draft at the brewpub. This was a pretty cool beer, very rich. Intensely strong with a very authentic Belgian taste. Raisins and dark fruit notes. Deep amber-brown color. Rugged, a great beer. noncaloric (684) - Madison, Wisconsin, USA - DEC 20, 2009
Hazy brown pour, thin tan head. Aroma of dulce de leche and sour fruits. Flavor is a complex mishmash whose parts don’t harmonize to me. Banana, clove, toffee, something a bit tart, against a medicinal alcohol backdrop. Would be a nice beer, but the flavors can’t stand up to the alcohol. Very warm on the palate, bracing. On draught at the Grumpy Troll Brewpub in downtown Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin. Pours a hazy brown amber colored brew with a thin off-white head that quickly dissipates clean. Aroma of banana, a hint of peach, dark grapes and a hint of clove. Taste is semi-sweet, full bodied, with flavors of banana, some peach, alcohol, and a touch of candi sugar. Finish is soft, mild banana esters, grape skin and plenty of alcohol kick. kingsman (3) - USA - OCT 21, 2009 does not count
Dark and forbidding, this belgian has a kick. it pours a beautiful dark brown with nice head and lacing. Very full flavored with a hint of alcohol but at over 9 percent, that is to be expected. this thing is devious. they told me the limit on this was two pints and i can see why. the flavor is outstanding and is on style with other belgian darks. the pub also had another golden belgian but i darer not try it as it is also over 9 percent.
