Erzengel (9504) - Wuppertal, GERMANY - JAN 29, 2014
500ml glass-bottle. BB 11.2006 Rating from 2006
Zutaten: Wasser, Malz, Hopfen, Erbsen - was auch immer Erbsen in Bier suchen sollen…

Pours hazy golden brown with an off white head. Aroma is bready, slightly fruity malts. Flavor is bready light and caramel malts. Not bad.

DrnkMcDermott (3137) - Downers Grove, Illinois, USA - JUL 17, 2008
UPDATED: JUL 29, 2008 Half-liter bottle. As "Zhiguly Ale for Export." Needed some boxes because we’re moving. The wife asks me to check at Binny’s. Well, this is the only time my wife will actually ask me to go to the liquor store. But I ought to buy something before I ask for boxes… aha! Cheap Baltic gasohol to the rescue!
Pours dark, kind of brassy yellow under a head head that dwindles away immediately. Unattractive swirl of bits left in the bottle. Smell betrays corn, plastic band-aids, phenols. Taste… well, what should I have expected? Corny, alcoholic fusels, notes of honey. Hard to find evidence of specific hops, just some bitterness that can’t keep back the sweetness. Rather insipid mouthfeel. Other ratings imply this might be better than the example I’ve found.

Radek Kliber (7483) - Toronto (Can) Krotoszyn (Pol), POLAND - FEB 18, 2008
Bottle 500 ml
Sold as Zhiguly Ale Appearance: bright sunny gold, spark white bright top (short lived).
Nose : Sweet nose, candy, meadow and caramel .
Flavor/Palate : Medium full bodied. Good balance, malty but not heavy. Following of mineral hops. Soft light finish. Alcohol felt much lighter than numbers suggested. Crisp, refreshing and well balanced. Drinkable, fun like Lithuanian.

500mL Bottle of "Zhiguly Ale." Aroma pours forth as a messed up honey, apple flesh, earth, yeast and caramel corn. So this is what a dirty eastern european lager smells and tastes like? Pours in tangelo skin with a white rim and murky backdrop of clouds. Flavors arise as a sharp, lightly bitter honey biscuit and cornbread. It’s actually interesting, with some appreciable sweetness, orange character, full body, breadiness and light eastern hops. I’m enjoying it. Probably, because of my attraction the Baltic States and for some new signatures in beer. I’m aware it’s heavily loaded with off-flavors that most brewers would cry about, but I come to expect them in a beer like this. Different and not so hard to drink, and that’s something I can appreciate that.

I actually enjoyed this beer. It had a nice fuller body, good flavors, and a crispy dry finish. The beer was slightly under complex, but was refreshing at least. Tasted a tad of alcohol, which was actually pleasant.

OneAngrySwede (1) - USA - AUG 25, 2007 does not count
Zhigula Ale 1 pint bottle. 1st taste was a bit on the harsh side but after that it went down smooth. Taste is reminscent of a more mainstream beer but what that would be escapes me at the moment. Well worth the $1.98 I paid for it.

thedm (6319) - Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA - AUG 2, 2007
This $3.00 bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a small sized head of foamy white colored bubbles that were mostly diminishing and left behind a hazy softly carbonated light orange brown colored body and a very good lacing. The mild aroma was citriousy doughy and malt hop like. The mouth feel was tingly at the start and at the finish with a mellow aftertaste. The yummy flavor contained notes of malt hops dough and orange peel.

nick76 (4402) - Tampa, Florida, USA - MAY 15, 2007
The aroma is unimpressive with band-aids and maple syrup, thats it. The appearance is light amber gold with an almost non existent head. The flavor is unpleasant and like the aroma. The palate is thin and the finish chemical. This is either old or bad or both.
