330ml bottle served in a Guinness pint just out of the fridge: This one pours an aqueous opaque black robe letting loose a frothy maple head with a rough structure showing moderate retention. You can see some rough lacing here and there but it quickly dissipates. The nose is somewhat sweet but you mostly get the roasted barley expressing notes of grounded coffee beans. The roasted aspect of the nose is well executed. On the tongue, you get a diluted version of the original stout. The barley is less present and the brew has less body so that’s kind of a downer. It has however a moderate bitterness that stays a while on the back of the palate. Overall this brew is an ok version of what a black lager should be with the barley of a stout trying to make its way to your palate. Good but not great.

UPDATED: FEB 22, 2015 16oz can. Dark ruby black with tan head. Aroma of roast/toast and wet sneakers. Light body, not to bad at first- roasted barley, toasted nuts. As it warms up and you trudge through it ounce by ounce it becomes less and less drinkable. It’s not horrendous, but most schwartzbiers I’ve had have been better. Finish is light roast.

Tasted on 11/21/14 from a capped 12oz bottle purchased at the grocery store in a mixed sixer. Pours nearly black dark brown with a thick beige head that slowly recedes to average lace. The nose is malty dark bread with a bit of a marshmallow note. The flavor is about the same with just a touch of bitter char. The body is light with lively, fizzy carbonation, and a short malty dark bread finish.

Bottle Oct 2014. Absolutely foul. Tried this a few years ago, and hated it. Nothing's changed. The burnt taste actually turns my stomach. Only beer on the planet that I'd rather pour out than drink. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

11.2 oz. bottle from Cash Wise in Williston. Appearance: half finger light khaki head, black color, opaque, good lacing. Aroma: earthy molasses, light licorice, light roasted grain. Palate: full body, soft carbonation, light bitter and dry finish, oily texture. Taste: sweet malt into a light roasted grain astringency, aftertaste is light licorice that lasts. Overall, surprisingly good, nothing amazing or standout about this beer, but smooth tastes and palate.

Plain dark lager with a slight roasted malt flavor. Very clean finish. A simple lager.
