Labatts brew a pale ale base to which is added the unfermented but hopped Guinness wort extract. Guinness Extra Stout is brewed in Canada by Labatt under license from Arthur Guinness Son & Company. Editors Note: It looks like Moosehead is also brewing Guinness. Bottles in the US are from there of late, but Canadian bottles are still showing Labatt. 04/23/06

Aroma: much more caramel-oriented aroma as opposed to the coffee aroma you get out of a Guinness Draught, reminds me of a slightly toasted flan dessert. Appearance: almost black and opaque with a long lasting tan creamy head. Taste: slightly bitter but overall well-balanced with the malt richness shining through. Palate: medium-full body, with a rich, creamy, pleasant mouthfeel. Slightly richer than Guinness Draught.

Pours black with a thin tan head. Roasted aroma. Bitter dark chocolate roast flavor. Very thin feel in the mouth.

UPDATED: AUG 27, 2016 Bottle that said "drink from the bottle ". Poured anyways. Dark brown, tan head. Light coffee, toffee aroma. Burnt/roasted malts, tame slight bitterness, faint mouthfeel. Formerly a more interesting beer in old-school times , less so now with all the craft availability.

Bottle at home to the dome. Pour is hazy brown with a small tan head and great lacing. Husky, cocoa, toasted malty, bready, straw, and licorice in the aroma. Taste is roasty, nutty, husky, corny, some cookie malt, toffee, earthy, and bready. Light mouthfeel with high carbonation. Bleh.

Sets the standard for all Irish stouts. Pours black, great cream head on nitro. Aroma of roasted malts, choc and toffee. Taste is always the same and great Mouthfeel is too light for me, but who am I to knock Guinness.

Still the benchmark for what a dry stout should be. Pros: Beautiful black color and, on nitro, a voluminous off-white head and creamy mouthfeel; nice, if light, roasted notes. Cons: Pretty light flavor; love-it-or-hate-it sour characteristics. Overall, a solid stout that Im always happy to order when Im out and about, but easily overshadowed by a lot of the worlds more flavorful, aggressive stouts.

Every now and then I get an itch for a heavy coffee like after work adult beverage, when a traditional lager wont cut it I go back to the Extra Stout and I am always pleased.

A bit richer than the original guiness and also a bit smoother. I love a dark beer and this one fits the bill.

12 oz Bottle -- Pours black with a thin soapy light brown head. Aromas of raisin, chocolate, fig, brown sugar, black current, and toast. Not overly sweet, with a long bitter finish. Pretty lively carbonation.

UPDATED: MAR 19, 2016 Originally rated on 8/15/08. (i was a big fan back then) Upon checking my inventory i couldnt belive that i hadnt reviewed this one. I used to be a huge guinness fan until they moved production to canada a few years ago and the quality (to me) dropped off. Anyway this is the only guinness that i still occasionally buy. A dark black body, minimal carbonation with a thin head, Mouthfeel thick and creamy. Flavor of malts and a little chocolate. Good finish, still a top notch brew.
