COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The basis is an unfermented but hopped Guinness wort extract shipped from Dublin, which is added to local pale malt ingredients and brewed locally. The Malaysian version has in recent years seen an ABV downgrade to 6.8%.

The FES currently (2010) found in Hong Kong is the Malaysian version, as is the FES found in Cambodia.

As of 2011, this is the version now found in the Peoples Republic of China, which formerly had a 5% version. That version no longer exists, so Chinese FES ratings should go here.

330ml can 6.8% Irish version bought at Snack Wordenland on Kau Yuk Road, Yuen Long

Looks: Clear, deep blackish brown colour; One finger head with crumpety beige foam which lasts for 2 minutes; Very good sticky lacing with zero carbonation.

Aroma: Quite fragrant dark malt, with fairly strong roastyness, caramel, coffee, strong chocolate, cream, floral, brown sugar, dark bread and grass.

Taste: Close to medium sweet rich dark malt, with strong roastyness, tartness, liquorices, red fruits, light dark fruits, burnt toast, caramel, toffee, strong black coffee, dark chocolates, light Cola, floral, light molasses, dark bread, strong lemon, quite strong bitter hops and strong strawy grass.

Body: Full body. Thick and creamy palate.

Mouth Feel: Full dark maltyness in a slightly oily background, very smooth and creamy. Strong black coffee dominates with good red fruits and light dark fruits, complemented by dark chocolates, Cola and strong floral. Sweetness is moderate, with dark bread and strong lemon to round. Nice!

Hoppiness: Floral and grass in nose. Strong lemon, floral and strong grass in taste; Bitterness - a mix of hops, burnt grains and liquorices - is tastefully strong for a lasting, very high astringent strawy malty finish.

After Taste: Fairly dry. Roasty and very bitter to mouth.

Comments: Somehow, this Irish original is less fragrant than the South East Asian version, but it is the taste where it shines: rich dark maltyness with strong roast and red fruits, wholesome creamy plus palate, plus bitterness from burnt toast, black coffee and liquorices. All ends very satisfying. If the aroma is stronger it will be great. A nice scoop as the great majority of local FES is from Malaysia.
Earlier Rating: 2/22/2013 Total Score: 3.8

Clear, deep blackish brown colour; Half-a-finger head and lasting mocha like foam; Small but good lacing; Strong and fragrant creamy aroma of roasted malt, coffee, raisin, vanilla and plums, which is then followed by light alcohol, and astringent hop when it warms. Sweet and pleasant taste of roast malt, burnt toffee, liquorices, grass and hops; Medium body, creamy palate; Taste profile is dominated by creamy, milky taste throughout, the roast malt taste is very BSA-like, very tasty and tempting; Despite the boozy smell, its knock-on effect is really minimal, almost none. Hoppiness and tartness are pronounce yet very pleasant, with nice and lingering bitterness give the finishing a nice touch. After taste is very similar to milk stout, surprisingly easy to mouth.

Comments: many raters have said the Irish original is the best FES of all the versions available. I havent had the opportunity to try it, but this Malaysian version Im having is really good in many areas - fragrant roast aroma, good body, nice and creamy BSA-like malt taste, memorable hop character yet its so easily likeable - it has shattered my stigma of stout and porter being just plain bitter and nothing more. This foreign-made FES has shown depths and characters to be likeable, so I really look forward to taste the Irish original one day. Recommended? You bet, at least in this part of the globe!

330 ml can. Pours dark brown with a creamy brown head. Aroma of roasted malts with dark chocolate. The taste starts moderate sweet with some acidity and a slight bitterness in the finish. Low carbonation. Could be a little more creamy. Flavor of roasted malts with caramel and chocolate and a little nutty along with some alcohol and ripe fruits.

Malaysia. Bitterer, cremig malziger Beginn. Angenehm hopfig im Hintergrund, was aber definitiv nebenschlich ist. Weich trotz der aufkommenden Trockenheit, vollmundig, moderat herb. Sehr gelungen. 9/9/9/10/8/10

Can, 320ml, 5.5% ABV, brewed by Heineken Malaysia. Black colour with a small head. Aroma of toasted malt. Flavour is burnt malt with some hop notes. Some treacle sweetness. A watery note but alcohol somehow evident despite the low ABV. Not bad but not very special.

Malaysian anniversary bottle version, thanks for the long haul & Dispatch aus dem Norden Cantabrian! - [email protected]s. - Bref: sweet export mix that resembles in nothing the frothy black stuff from dear dirty Dumplin, - but still tops the alcoholic Belgian Export Version! - Charred malts, brown sugar, burnt toast, deep cheap caramels, bitters going on burnt chicory root. Good body for the abv.
