If you were in a pub sometime between 1821 and 1970, chances are this is the Guinness you would have been drinking. Originally brewed as the XX version of our Porter, it’s hoppy, roasty, and crisp, with a bittersweet finish.

Bottle in PJ’s, Carlingford, 26/01/13. Label states 4.2%. Light black/extremely dark mahogony brown in light with a good sized frothy beige head. Nose is roast malt, barley, mineral and metallic notes, fairly subdued overall. Taste comprises roast malt, barley, grain, mineral tones. Medium in body with moderate carbonation if not a little on the prickly side, dry finish. An average dry stout.

Guinness Original XX bottl.e Poured a near black color with an off white head. Lots of roastiness and burnt malts. A bit thin.

Kittenbieer (226) - LYON, FRANCE - JUN 5, 2017

500ml can. Roast, burnt malt, slight black coffee. Not the best Guinness, but enjoyable.

Black color. Medium carbonation. Very light malty aroma, touch of roastiness. Flavor is light, actually quite bright up front, before finishing dry and burnt in the end. Watery body, but what do you expect from 4.2%. Ok beer.

jamesie1857 (2175) - Sheffield, South Yorkshire, ENGLAND - MAY 29, 2017
500ml bottle from Tesco - Deep red-tinged black body, thin beige head. Nose is roasted malts, bit of toast, bit of smoke. Taste is sharp up front, malty, few hops, lots of toasted notes. Body a bit watery. Can’t believe I can’t rated this before!

Pours deep black-red, big yellow foamy head that fades quickly. Burnt malty aroma, lively carbonation, sour flavours of coffee and toffee.

Echon (535) - Århus, DENMARK - MAY 19, 2017
Black. Roasted barley and notes of coffee in the aroma. Mild, lightly tart and rather dry taste, and a discrete malty flavour, that finishes dry and lightly bitter. Medium body. Overall, a boring stout. Nice aroma, but this beer has very little to offer in terms of taste and flavour.

radassace (340) - SCOTLAND - APR 29, 2017
500ml bottle. Pours dark with a little red tinge to it, slightly see through at the bottom of the glass. Small tan head. Nose is dark and milk chocolate, roasted malt and some hoppiness. Light carbonation, fairly thin. Taste is roasted malt, chocolate and a touch of dark fruit. Light bitter finish. There is also a bit of licorice too. Better than the nitrous stuff for sure. It’s very drinkable if a little underwhelming.
