Bottle at brewery. Dark brown, almost black with red tint and foamy off-white head. Nice looking brew. clean with asphalt, husk, and dark malt. Quaffable beer with low carbonation. Nice sweet malty flavors and licorice permeat, then finish also with anise and asphalt and is not a toasty example. Really good. Oakes (17813) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - SEP 2, 2009

.5 liter bottle at spuyten. Pours a nice deep dark amber-coppery brown with a nice lasting head. Aroma is a sharp toasty almost roasted malt character, nutty and chocolate- very clean sliight yeast, and no diacetyl like the previous beer. Rich toasty, dark munich and slight chocolate malt flavor, a drying toastiness, nutty all the way through and a crisp clean finish. Pours a dark reddish brown with a foamy brown head. Sweet, malty flavors. Almost root beery. I liked this one, the smooth body makes it pretty nice too.

Bottle at Spuyten Duyvil - dark amber beer, with a moderate, soapy lace - lightly smoky aroma, with notes of chocolate, char, tobacco - medium-bodied - crisp, almost tart up front, followed by some notes of berries, doughy flavors, light bitterness and roast - very smooth, solid, drinkable - nice schwarz. 0.5L bottle at Spuyten Duyvil. Deep brown, ruby-tinted beer with a thin white head. Aroma is lightly malty and cocoaish with a soft toasted malt character. Chewy and sweet but with a light chocolatey character. Deeply cocoaish flavour over a soft but well-lagered clean sweetness. Lots of munich character through the middle. Really nice beer.
