On tap at Håndverkerstuene. Firm, tan coloured head to a more or less jet black body. Smell of coffee with sweet malts beneath. Roasted coffee malts in flavour and bittering malts to a lingering finish. Medium bodied. A fine after dinner drink (Oslo, 25.05.2011).

On tap at Håndverkerstuene. Smooth velvety porter. A little edge of alcohol, lovely long lingering feeling of French roast coffee. Some sweet milk chocolate well balanced by a fine bitterness.

On tap at Amundsen. Pitch black colour with a medium big beige head. Aroma is laden with coffee as well as some malts. Some cocoa. Flavour is bitter. Notes of roasted coffee and roasted malts again. Cocoa again. Charcoal?

Clear deep ruby with a brown creamy head that laces excellently. Turkish coffee, caramel sauce and chocolate nose. Sweet and bitter flavors with Turkish coffee and roasted notes along with wood and hints of smoke. Dry mouth. Medium to full body. Syrupy texture.

330 ml draught at Håndverkerstuene. Black and clear. Small fine-laced beige head. Mellow, but delicious, coffee aroma. Roasted earthy coffee character. Refreshing, almost acidic, malty flavours. Hops are there, but well hidden. A little bitterness surfaces towards the end. A great beer. Well balanced and complex, and very enjoyable. Love it.

On tap @ Cardinal. Dark red body, almost black with a fine beige head. Aroma is totally dominated by coffee. There is a hint of dark malt as well, but in a blind test I would assumed this was coffee. Flavor is strong, good roasted coffee, malt, and milk chocolate with bitter hops in the aftertaste. For me this is more like cold coffee with beer than beer with coffee flavor. Not balanced at all, never had this much coffee flavor in a beer before, even compared with Beer Geek Breakfast. But I like coffee and this tastes like fine coffee to me. Extreme but enjoyable.

On tap at Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger, as HaandBryggeriet Costa Rica Porter. Black colour, low tan head. Lovely aroma of mild coffee and dark chocolate, a hint of cigarbox. Medium dry flavour with coffee, dark chocolate and a touch of tar and smoke. Another good beer from HaandBryggeriet!

Tap @ Baran Cafe, Bergen. Costa Rica has a near black body with a thin almost non-existing head. Sweet and nice aromas where I get hints of good quality coffee and weak licorice. Tastes silky smooth, slightly sweet with notes of some dark berries and coffee. Medium bodied and medium carbonated. Finishes off with a nice slightly acidic finish. Got better and better when it got some temperature, so served at the right temperature this is really nice. Want more!

On tap at Baran, Bergen. Pours almost pitch black with a 1 inch creamy tanned head. Aroma develops as the beer warms up, so here is all sorts of lovely stuff; roasted malts, strong acidic coffee with some sour notes, i even sense some liquorice as well. Taste is more of the good stuff, coffee and roasted malts with the addition of a very smooth mouthfeel, the brain resist when the mouth wants to swallow, it´s too good to be swallowed. Nice lingering medium sweet roasted malts in the aftertaste. Haandbryggeriet have done it again, this one would be interesting to store for a year or two, magificent beer.

First one on this? Strange. I thought people usually rated the beer as it is entered into the database... Oh, anyhow: on tap @ Baran Cafe, Bergen. Deep brown, near-black body with a pillowy, off-white head. Aroma is virtually non-existent, with only a few faint tones of coffee and black berries. Deceptive, as the taste is very pronounced - strong notes of powdery filter coffee, smoke and black berries lingering in the aftertaste. Some mocha tones and roasted malts as well. Perhaps a bit unbalanced taste-wise, as the dry, almost parching coffee flavor dominates in a somewhat excessive degree over the relatively slim body. OK, but not great.
